weight gain right after surgery

Recommended Posts

Ok I searched the forum.... called a friend who had the lap band a month before me and she didnt gain weight... So here I am asking away...

Ok liquid Protein shakes sat sun mon and tues.... then nothing after 9pm on tuesday....Surgery on wednesday around noon... Since then I have had ice chips and Water.... I have had 2 shakes since I returned home today (thurs) and I just for the heck of it weighed myself.... AND I am up 10 pounds from Wednesday morning...How does that happen... And how ticked off do you think I am about it Arghhhh!

Anyone else experience this....? And if you did when did that come back off... I am assuming it is Water and swelling....

All comments welcomed!

I had surgery on 5/14. I lost 11 pounds with the pre-op diet and when I got home after surgery on the 14th, I had gained all of it back. I have now -- just a week later, lost a total of about 15 pounds.

I lost 7 lbs. on prediet and had my surgery 4/19. I have not gained at all, kept losing and today 25 lbs. down. I have followed the guidelines, mostly Soups, soft foods, etc. But I am watching the numbers and intake. I don't do Protein Drinks I just eat higher Protein foods. chicken, eggs, creme of wheat, potoatoes, veggies, etc. NO breads, or things like that yet. I love the raspberry sherbert too and have a bowl daily. I'm not hungry.

I had lost about 16 pounds during the preop diet... I have done everything according to the docs and nurses....I guess everyone is different....It surely is not for lack of trying or not obeying what the Doc said to do.... I just had surgery yesterday.....

It wouldnt be like me to lose anyways... I tend to gain weight with Water LMAO!!

I think EVERYONE gains weight during the surgical period. For one thing, all they continued to do was to change my IV bag, filling my body with fluids and I KNOW I didn't go enough to get rid of them.

Don't fret--the scale will begin going down again. Life as we knew it before will never be again!! :crying:

Could it be around TOM and retaining Water weight?

No it isnt TOM.. I am on cycle day 16 of a 28 day cycle.....

It has to be the fluids... I think I got at least 3 bags....AND I drank 70 ounces of between 8pm last night-6am this morning... and still drinking Water now... I will check the scale tomorow.....

I put a call into the Nurse... so she can tell me how long this Water weight will stay on... Or if there is something I need to do...

I hear you with the whole P-ing thing.... I feel like I have to go badly... but it just trickles out LOL! I think the pain meds slow down that muscle......

My suggestion is to step away from the scale and don't go near it again until at least a week after your surgery date. Surgery has a lot of impact on our bodies and it takes a while to get back to normal. I didn't even bothing weighing myself until my post-op at one full week out and I had lost 9 pounds. I have no idea what my weight did during that week until then but I would not have been surprised to find it off course. I think the rule of thumb should be to worry about nothing but resting and healing during that first week.

Agreed with Dan - and drink some warm green tea. Tea is both a hydrator and a diuretic (makes ya pee) whereas coffee will just suck Water out of you and it puts your body out of wack.

Also, you didn't mention Soups or broths, but just be careful with those. They can be loaded with sodium. My body will have 1mg of sodium and make a general announcement that we are now retaining every drop of water...it's aggravating...so I have to drink lots to counteract it.

I'm CERTAIN its Water weight. However I'd be concerned about the lack of peeing. When I was banded, they were measuring my urine whenever I went. I was the floor champ, with 2200 cc's a pop. You need to flush the water you're retaining so you don't get a bladder/ut infection. They were really concerned about the volume of urine post op for me.

But in the end your body knows what to do :crying: The numbers will owe you, sister!!!

Thank you Kate!

You sound like me... I can look at something salty and my body holds on to Water LOL

I have not had any broth or soups.... Just two shakes... I am going to send hubby out for some green tea!! Thank you for the suggestion....

Ohh and btw... SUPER weightloss.. You rock!!

Thank you too Dan... I tend to be a chronic weigher... I must step away from the scale LOL

I was banded 5/19/08. They weighed me when I first went in. The morning after surgery they brought a scale in and weighed me again--I was 10 pounds more. But the nurse warned me that it would be higher because of all the IV fluids. I weighed myself this morning at home and still have the 10 pounds. Today is my third and final day of Clear liquids. I'm not hungry at all--nothing sounds or tastes good. I'm drinking lots of Water and I'm ready with Soups, etc. when my appetite comes back.

Please understand the difference between body weight and body fat. It is not possible for you to have gained 10 pounds of body fat, so logic would tell you that the body weight is from other causes. I don't know about you, but my tummy was so swollen and I was retaining an awful lot of protective Water.< /p>

Exactly....Don't step on a scale for about a week or two because it is off... and when u get on the scale remember that yr body is made up of 3/4 Water anyway... But I think it was almost 10-15lbs that came off pre-and when i did step on the scale when it said i had lost more but i added by 4lbs myself because i know i didn't have any water in my system and when i started to drink fluids again the scale would change... But u are swollen and everything.. it will be ok....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
