weight loss slow down?? answers?

Recommended Posts

so i dropped 26+ within the first 8 days or so. and since then (about another 8 days) i've stayed at the same place - roughly...

any thoughts on why?

i'm eating anywhere between 600-900 cals/day. my base caloric burn is 3200. i should be burning 2400 cals/day. i should be down (just on math alone) 5 additional pounds.

My first question is when were you banded? My second question is have you had your first fill?

I have been banded for six weeks now. I lost the first two weeks constantly. liquids will do that for you. Once I hit mushies the weight loss definately slowed down - A LOT! Soft foods - completely. I've even gained a little bit back. I think your body also goes into "survival mode". You are literally eating barely enough for your body to function. 600 calories a day is insane! I was eating the same thing the third week out. Your body is holding on to everything you eat.

If you are still in the healing stages, let your body do that - heal. This time is not for weight loss, though if you do lose then it is just a bonus! After you get your first fill then the weight loss should start back (if you get any restriction). I'm in the same boat as you - waiting for my fill. Hang in there. I know it is frustrating. It's one day at a time.

I look at it this way - it took me years to get this heavy, I am not going to lose overnight.

Hey RAS - two things come to mind. One, if you're only at 600 - 900, you could be heading into a teensy bit of a starvation mode, your body's trying to keep things balanced. Two, after a big drop like that, your body again is trying to balance. It has to learn how to do everything it was used to doing on less fuel...I consider my fat burning like a prissy little tax man who lives in my metabolism. he'll take from savings only when I startle him. He's damned good at catching on to my low calories, so I'll eat more 1500 calorie a day meals for a little while until he's mellowed out, then I'll slash again.

It's the same principle as getting monthly fills. You're chugging along and then you get a fill, are on liquids/mushy for a couple of days. Your body reacts immediately and dumps excess weight by ripping through your fat stores, but it can adjust pretty fast.

Just make sure you're getting enough Protein and nutrients, please? And be patient. It's only been 8 days. Are you exercising??

And don't expect weight loss to be consistently downward week after week. You will have weeks where you do everything right and lose nothing (or go up a pound), especially if you've recently lost a lot.

Keep an eye on the big picture and don't sweat the day-to-day scale fluctuations.

If you haven't already, I suggest making a chart in Excel, on graph paper, or some other way, to track your overall progress.

If you go 2-3 weeks without losing, then it's time to make adjustments.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
