Did NOT expect this response from my PCP!

Recommended Posts

My pcp, who was DEAD set against lap band surgery when I had it almost a yr ago, in fact told me WHY it would NOT be successful and how I would fail with it, and how she would only support me having RNY...just surprised me. Back then, I gave her a TON of information on what lap band is and is not...and she snidely told me, yeah, she would eventually look at it....I just called her. I told her that I have lost 80 lbs and am very close to goal. I reminded her of who I was and what she had told me. She said not only did she remember me, but wanted to thank me, and tell me how grateful she was. She said she read everything I gave her, and has been passing THAT information off to a few patients who have inquired about WLS!!! She repeated several times how grateful she was that I called her to tell her about my success and asked what online communities I was involved in...Of course I mention SLH but also Obesityhelp.com. She said she would LOVE it if I would stop in sometime to see her, so she could talk to me more about it!!!

I feel so good that I was able to educate my doctor in lap band surgery...wonder what I should charge for the consultation...lol

I did the same thing with my PCP, and while she wasn't as effusive in her thanks I do know that she's shared the info with at least a couple of other patients. I really think word-of-mouth is going to be the best advertising for banding, since the docs don't seem to want to "sell" it.

Hi,

I have someone in my past I would like to meet at a dinner party. It was the therapist that turned me down with doc #1 who said I had anger management issues and would not do well with the band unless I had preop therapy. I went to see her (before banding). I had never met her and she based all of her information about a life changing decision for me on what an intern told her and an MMP panel. Since then, I heard that she is not practicing anymore and that she herself has had some really severe emotional issues. Heard it direct from the original surgeons wife. I had to pick another surgeon and I picked my own shrink who said I was normal and had no major issues that would get in the way of me having a lapband. People are not always right in their opinions. At least your doc admits that she was wrong about her assessment.

Kudos to you. It only takes little steps to change perception.

Hi. Kudos to you & to your PCP as well. In my experience, doctors are not exactly the first people in the world to admit they've been wrong! My doctors are amazed too, and it's only been 38 lbs. for me! My internist is the one I told about the South Beach diet, and HE's the one who lost the weight. My plastic surgeon (I have had breast cancer, but am o.k. now) is so amazed, he wants to see me every two months, and when I get to goal, he'll give me a complimentary mini tt (my reconstruction came from my abdominal tissue, so I had a tt to begin with, but gained a lot after). Maybe when I lose 80 lbs, they'll be recommending it like your doc is. Good work!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
