Liver Still Too Large What Now?????

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on the 16th with Dr. Van Wagner in St. Louis, after coming out of surgery I found out that my liver was still to large for him to get the band on. So after all of this I still didnt get my band. I followed the pre op diet as dirrected no cheats!

I talked to a nurse but she didnt say to me yes he will re do it and I dont get to see him until tomorrow and I'm going a little nutz! I've worked for eight months to get this surgery just to come out of it with 5 holes and no band!

Totally sad!

:wink2:

Oh Crystal,

I am so sorry to hear what you have gone through. I would assume that he will redo it in a couple of months after another strict liver reducing diet. I will keep you in my prayers. Are you experiencing any pain from the surgery or since he just did some exploratory are you feeling pretty healthy? Good luck and keep us posted.

Cindi

that sucks. it's strange how some doc's are concerned about liver size and others aren't. My doc didn't even put me on a pre-op diet...

i hope it works out for you!

Wow.. I am so sorry to hear that. Someone else on here went thru the same exact thing. Depending on your bmi, and or either your tummy fat you should have prob. went on a 3-mth pre-op diet with all liquids or something... They do it on Big Medicine all the time on there. Did they give u any type of r/s date yet?

Sorry to hear about your situation. Would an ultra-sound have resolved this issue? My doctor prescribed an ultra sound to look at my liver before performing the surgery. Perhaps you can get an ultra-sound to make sure you are ready next time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
