Yes, I am on day 5 of an all liquid Protein diet. I can have Protein shakes, Jello, broth, crystal light & yogurt smothies. The first couple of days I did alright except for a bad headache which I attributed to stopping my beloved Diet Pepsi cold turkey.

I am not diabetic but I do have Insulin Resistance. At day 5 my headaches aren't so bad but none of the allowable liquids are stopping the hunger pangs. Yesterday afternoon I went out to Lowes with hubby and had to sit down...I suddenly felt so dizzy, nauseous, clammy and my brain stayed pretty fuzzy until I went to bed. And as the day wears on I get so tired of the hunger pains that I am irritable. I have ten more days to go pre-op then I will be on about the same diet for another 14 days post-op, hopefully after surgery things will be a little easier.

Thanks for the quick response. How long did the whole process take? I mean from the seminar to the surgery date? I'm getting anxious. I have BC/BS/ of Michigan and they tell me that's one of the best. you have a great day....I'm about to head to the beach and as always will most likely be one of the biggest babes there!! Life goes on anyway....lol

  • Seminar September 2007
  • Consultation September 2007
  • Found out my insurance through Anthem would not cover surgery so I put it off for a few months preparing to be a self-pay.
  • During that time my insurance changed to United Health Care.
  • Went back in April to get started through the process prepared to self-pay but hoping my new insurance would cover it.
  • Had my barium swallow, psych eval and nutrition classes in mid-April.
  • Surgeons office submitted a letter of recommendation for surgery to United Health Care on April 30th.
  • Recieved approval from United Health Care in the mail on May 9th. Called the surgeons office right away and they scheduled my pre-op and surgery.
  • Had my bloodwork & EKG done on May 14th, my pre-op is tomorrow and my surgery date is May 30th.

Oh I know exactly how you feel, I wanted every last tiny detail from anyone! LOL. Deep breaths serenity, it's definitely gonna happen for you!!! I know it! :wink2:  For me, it was 2 months after my surgeon's visit, add another month before that for gathering up data, visiting my PCP, psych eval, and boom. Done :hand: Once the surgery date was set, the weeks WHIPPED by. It was so weird. My friend Lexy just got banded yesterday and she said the same thing.

3 Carnation Instant Breakfast Drink No Sugar 8 oz skim or 1% milk

2 Healthy Choice (or the like of - Smart Ones etc.) 220 to 300 Calories

2 cups of low Calorie Veggies No Sauce or cheese or anything just Veggies

64 oz a day of Water or zero cal drink

OK honesty time. I soooo did not last on the 2 week liquid pre op diet. I lasted all of 5 days, then went back to Wendy's. I felt like crap, I was hungry, I was upset, I felt unsatisfied, did I mention hungry, emotional over being separated from my food when I wanted it.

The biggest thing I think was that frankly, Slim Fast, Carnation, all that CRAP is completely filled with preservatives, processed stuff. Since getting on the band, I went to the Blood Type Diet (now the GenoType Diet), and SLOWED DOWN enough in eating to realize my specific body just hated certain foods. Slim Fast is one of them. Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine...any "low fat" food is chock full of monstrously distorted natural foods...and then it was confirmed when I had some testing done and found my body was allergic to preservatives! Ha. It knew better than I did, I just never listened.

I could eat 20 calories a day of natural organic food and never feel as crappy as I felt on Slim Fast, Herbalife, Smart Ones, Healthy Choice etc.

I think if you try eating low fat Beans, rice, veggies, even if not organic, then make them FRESH, you will slash the fat in your diet, feel full and SATED (which is incredibly important) and drop weight pre-op.

I guess the docs want you drinking liquids to 'get used to it' but I think it's BS, personally. Some docs don't even require a pre-op diet, so clearly it's not all about the fatty liver issue

I'm a type II diabetic and I take Metformen 500mg 2x a day, along with Avandia 8mg 1x a day and Byetta 10mcg which I inject 2x a day. My sugars are reading at 160 - 175 first thing in the am. I'm hoping to lesson my meds by being banded. Do you have this problem and has it improved?

I wish I had something great to tell you. I unfortunately don't suffer with Diabetes. But Type II I heard can be brought under control with diet and weight loss.

The "sweeteners" they put in the Slim Fast/Carnations...I wonder if that's the problem?

Mention this to your doctor. Maybe he can recommend you swap out the Carnation with a Protein shake with better ingredients. I am a HUGE fan of Soy Protein. Sometimes the whey protein can wreak a little havoc on people's insides. For me, the Soy's incredibly delicious, moreso (and I love the chocolate flavor better) and is packed with protein. Protein makes you feel satisfied.

If your doctor is clueless (which i doubt) it might be worth going to ask a holistic nutritionist if there is food you can swap out to help control your blood sugar.

I am not an expert on diabetes, but if these readings are new and high, there has to be SOMEthing in what you're eating that's really upsetting your pancreas.

Thanks for you input - something is making me feel CRAPPY  and it took 5 days into it for my body to say it! I will admit I had a Snickers bar today at work because I felt so bad I thought I was gonna die - so it's got to be the no sugar that is messing with me :wink2: I know I'm bad but I felt better after eating it! I'm still sticking with the low cal for the day..

I believe it is quite natural to feel a little crappy after starting the pre-op diet as that diet makes you stop eating a lot of sugar and also lowers your calorie intake compared to what you are used to.

I was on Metformin 2x per day for Type II diabetes. I was only diagnosed with diabetes around New Years so I've only had it around six months or less. I've been banded only three weeks and already I don't need medication for it anymore! My blood is around 100 in the morning and 90ish two hours after eating. That was one of the things I was really hoping and praying for and I am so happy to see it working!:wink2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
