How Much Protein is too much?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was on 05/13. My doc's intructions state that I am to consume atleast 40 grams of Protein. I found that I stay full from the Protein Drinks, so I have been consuming 60-70 grams. My total caloric intake is about 600. I have not lost anything since the surgery. Could this be a result of too much protein?

My surgeon wants us to have at least 70 grams of Protein after surgery for at least the first 6 months.

Don't focus on the weightloss at this point but getting your body to heal. You many only want to weigh once a week so you don't get discouraged if you aren't losing as quickly as you think you should. Keep doing what you are supposted to and it will come off.

45-60 is what my doc recommends. I'm sure as with other things, this will vary by doctor.

It also sounds like it's primarily the US docs that focus so much on Protein.

My doctor wants his patients to consume 40-60 grams of Protein a day but after six weeks it should be coming from solid foods and not protein drinks. Also, my doctor expects weightloss within the fist six months and stated that is when he sees the most significant weightloss.

If you haven't lost any weight, don't worry, you just had surgury and you may be retaining some Fluid (edema), if you haven't seen how the surgury goes, even something simple like this can cause swelling, If I was you, dont weight yourself until its been at least month, tell someone to hide the scale!

My doctor put me on a 3 week liquad diet 60-90 grams of Protein a day. I drink Adkins shakes, and smoothies I buy at the docs office. I have lost 5 lbs in 4 days but I have major headaches I am sure due to lack of carbs.

Focus on healing right now, Protein amounts will vary with each Dr. but know that you can only absorb 20 grams at a time, so make sure you spreading out your intake, I'll assume your on liquids right now. But as an fyi, later many of the things in our diets have protien, like eggs, bean Soup, squash Soup. cheese, etc, read the labels to see.

But you are swollen and gassy so don't get on the scale right now. You probably aren't having bowl movements either. Let your insides heal, swelling go down, all your bodily functions return, and start walking around every day and you will start to feel your weight moving. Be patient. Like the other post said, hide your scale for a few days. Good luck

My doc recommends 60 grams of Protein. I think your Protein is fine but I'm wondering about your calorie intake. 600 sounds really low. Twice that, 1200, is what is usually recommended people on a 'diet' try to eat per day. Also, you just had surgery, your body is probably swollen and stuff. Give it time. That said, I'd still take a look at your total calorie intake, is 600 what your doc recommends? I know we all got the band to help us eat less and lose weight, but I also believe there is a minimum threshold, calorie wise, that even we need to meet so that our bodies don't go into starvation mode. But what do I know, with only 40 pounds lost in 5 1/2 months, I'm in the minimum amount of weight lost zone.

Good luck!

My doctor has me on 60 grams of Protein a day. I have to drink 3 protein drinks a day and it can be difficult. He said that I should stick with a drink that gives me about 20 grams at a time because it is hard for your body to absorb more then that at one time. As far as 600 cal. that is about what I was consuming right after surgery and I wasn't losing any weight either. I up the calories to about 1000 cal. and have lost a couple of pounds. I don't know if it is because I am taking in more calories or if it is because I am feeling a lot better. Don't worry so much about losing weight, it will start coming off, just worry about healing!!! Good luck to you!!!!

Hi,

my surgery was on the 12th. For a full week, Instead of losing, I kept gaining about 1/2 a pound a day. I was so fraustrated. But then this morning, when I weight myself. i dropped 2.5 lbs.

I think your body is trying to adjust to the weight loss. So don't worry about it. I spoke to the nurse and she said that you will start seeing weight loss after the fill for sure...

i heard the same thing. I've been drinking the Isopure also. So now instead of drinking the whole thing. I split Isopure into 2 servings. I also added a packet of Kellogg Protein water(powder) to it. So I'm getting about 40 (35+5) or 45 (40+5)

It usually takes me about 2 hours to drink one. I just take little sip at a time....

Caligirl626, total Protein intake each day varies by Dr. and study, most say anywhere from 50 to 70 grams a day, I dont think there is too much you can get, however, what I was saying is that you only absorb 20 grams at one time.

So, if you are drinking a Protein shake that has 46 grams in it and you drink it all in one siting, you are only getting the benefit of 20 grams at that time. You need to take in your Protein throughout the day. For example if I am busy, I will make a Protein Shake using 1/2 scoop whey protein =23 grams of protein in morning. Then for lunch I will have salmon salad and slice of cheese and few berries = 10 grams protein, Then dinner, tilipia, broccolli, hard boiled egg = 22 grams protein . So this day I have gotten at least 55 grams just with these meals, not counting anything else. So if you are using Isopur or any protein drinks you just want to remember if you drink all 50-70 grams in one drink, you are only absorbing 20 grams of it this time. You can still drink the entire drink. You'll just need to get more protein later in the day.

I got this information from my Diabetic dietitian last summer when I was diagnosed with early diabetes and since my family Dr has also told me the same thing. We have discussed this at 2 of my support groups also and they found out the same thing either from other doctors or on the internet.

If you can eat mushie's or solid food now, I would suggest using the protein drinks in amounts that are equal to about 20-25 grams each drink, then you could have as many as three a day if you didn't think you got all your protein in that day, and save money, Isopur is not cheap.

Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse anyone earlier. I sure hope this has cleared it up for you. If not say so and I will either shut up or try another approach, LOL

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
