Ok, so Kaiser has not called me back yet to officially deny me, but I just received my new insurance packet on their individual plans, and under exclusions, the first thing listed is BARIATRIC SURGERY.

What's ironic is while I shopped around for insurance I called Kaiser and every other national company and personally asked if they excluded this surgery from their individual plans, and get this - they LIED. They told me they did.

The fact that they lied, about something as important as my health insurance, is making me sick. It has not yet set in that I cannot get this surgery now.

How can they do this, how can they lie about what they do and not include?

You might try filing an appeal -- but if it is an excluded procedure, you may not find success.

I know there are some people here with Kaiser who have been approved.

I'm sorry you've reached this bump in the road. Best of luck to you.

I would definitely look into the exclusion. my mother was hospitalized for 5 weeks at Kaiser (Santa Clara) and I saw poster for bariatric surgery

Kaiser has a ton of different plans. I have them thru DH's work and I'm covered. Individual plans are different. Kaiser may have covered it when you called but changed the plan while you were waiting to get covered and get your paperwork. I'm not defending them, it's just a possible explanation.

I have also heard from Kaiser employees that they have had such a huge influx of new patients joining Kaiser JUST to get surgery that you now have to be a Kaiser member for AT LEAST one year before you can even start the surgery program.

Hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
