Exercising For Weight Loss

Rugman, good job, you have quite a routine mapped out for yourself but it sounds very doable. Good move no overhead with weight. I think the overhead moves and raising off floor with arms up with weight is what did me in. I also have minor ruptures in lower back and had injections in January, they did wonders and I am not about to ruin that. Remember as you gain muscle the weight of that will take over the loss of body fat so you might not think you lost any weight for awhile until your body catches up with your new routine. Take some measurements. I will bet you will see a difference soon. Proud of you rugman. Keep up the good work and keep us posted.

Fenton, I know, once in awhile I'd like to see some trainers looking more like they are still a work in progress and improving so we can work along. Its bad enough we have to see our profile in a mirror while we are on a treadmill, we don't need to see great bodies looking at us too LOL.. I say there are enough things you can do on your own safely to stay active to still get good use of a gym without the trainer right now. Are there any bandsters in your area that might be interested in being a workout buddy with you?? I have had 2 people ask me that I post with on another site, but we live on opposite sides of town and with gas so high we have settled for private email encouragement for now. Don't let those bodies get you down. I don't think I want to have to work that hard to stay looking like that anyway. I want to be healthier and yes thinner but I'm not looking to look like that, especially at 52. Take the pressure off yourself. Just do what you'll be happy with. OK Sugrbear

Well, Sugr, it's not the fact that many gyms, particularly in NYC, are filled with people with great bodies that I find concerning, but that there are so many gyms nowadays that personal trainers grow like mushrooms. There are so many of them, and I don't believe they're all well-trained and intelligent individuals. When inexperienced or incompetent trainers are working with young, fit bodies, they're far less likely to do harm than when dealing with someone older, a bit crumblier, with weight and health issues.

Very true fenton, my main concern all along, one of my support group memebers son just became certified as a trainer and he said they are not trained to approach us any differently than any other person in the gym. She recommended to him that all gyms should have an on staff orthoped/chiro or some form Dr to guide them to handle older, or weight, health challenged individuals in a more productive safer manner. Will that ever happen, doubtful..

I agree with both of you about "training." I don't mean to be on a downer but to tell you the truth --- I find that we are living in a world where every field CLAIMS to have highly trained/professional people but quality is lacking all over the place. For the last week I have had a LOT of pain in my mouth. I began a root canal procedure in Boston (at a highly regarded dental center) and the dentist caused serious ulceration in my mouth. It seems that they use bleach (yes---that's right----bleach---as in Clorox!!) to flush out the canals. In this case, the bleach was mishandled. When I tried my best to "silently scream" with pain as the bleach proceeded to burn my mouth and throat --- the dentist minimized it and continued. I just saw my primary care who says it will take about another week before the ulcers and pain will clear. Even my sinuses and ears hurt! Now -- I ask you---if we can't even trust dentists at a world renowned research/teaching facility --- how can we trust personal trainers who get FAR less training and medical specialist. It seems that we are all just so darn busy and stressed out these days that no one really has the time anymore to LEARN well or slow down long enough to be thoughtful and careful.

I guess the GOOD part of this story is that I can't eat much!! LOL!!

I've restarted doing yoga, which is a really good thing.

I have started (and will continue, for the forseeable future!) easily, doing Rodney Yee's 20 minute morning routine in AM YOGA FOR BEGINNERS, and now am easing into something called, I think, YOGA CONDITIONING FOR WEIGHT LOSS, with Suzanne Deason. The latter is a 45 + minute sequence, and a bit more demanding, but it's a very well-produced DVD: you can do the full-on sequence that the trainer does, or you can follow a modified routine, either a 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4 less strain/effort than it would take to do the full routine.

It's actually a pretty clever DVD - you can watch the group of four practitioners, each working at their own level, or you can select to watch just the person who's doing the routine at the level you want to follow.

Yesterday evening I did the fully modified version, which offers support for your forward bends and less strenuous positions. Overall, it was a good balance, with some bits which were a little too easy, and some which tested my limits - at my size, holding one's hands over one's head, or stretched out horizontally, for prolonged lengths of time is very challenging indeed.

Still, it was the first time in a while; one of the great things about the DVD is that as you strengthen, you can graduate to the next level of difficulty. And, if my previous experience is anything to go by, I'll move up fairly quickly as I gain in strength and flexibility.

So, yeah, I think it's a great DVD - and only $8.49 at Amazon! $2.50 or so secondhand!

I bought a good pedometer (omron) and started the 10,000 steps a day thing. I have a bad knee and even steps were getting too challenging for me. It was a big motivator for the surgery.

The first two weeks I walked only 8500 steps, now I make the 10,000 easily. I go to the gym and spend one hour on the tread mill at an incline of 1.5 and a speed of between 2.5 and 3.0. My heart rate increases and I sweat a lot. After I return from Sweden I think I will start some lap swimming or something. I'm so frustrated that I can't find an adult deep Water aerobics class. I so loved that program when I did it a couple of years ago.

Ooh, Hastings - Sweden! One of my favourite places to travel! I wonder what the calorie content of pickled herring is.

Nice work on the weight loss. I have an Omron too - those things are great! I still carry it, even though I'm wearing a Bodybugg.

Rugman, sorry to hear of your pain, my oldest daughter has had some real nightmare stories with dentist so she will only go to one now so if he dies, she will have to resort to becoming toothless as she ages.

Fenton, I keep telling myself to try yoga, my diabetec counselor told me a year ago, I eat stress and she thought it would be good for me. what exactly does it do for you? I have a beginner video I just picked up a week ago and plan to start but was wondering from someone who does it, what you feel like it does for you?

Hastings, my lap band guarantee just sent me a pedometer/am fm radio looks nice, I just have to figure out how to set and use the thing. 24hr fitness tried to sell me a bodybugg at the great reduced price of only 269.00 haha, no way, thats money I will use when I travel to Pa and Rehoboth beach De to see my grandkids and my home at the beach.

Well, I had my third fill today, I am still losing, was starting to feel real hungry shortly after a meal, to the point of not being able to control it so they did a fill only 2 weeks after my 2nd one. So I am at 5cc in a 10cc band.

Since I was banded March 28 I have lost 20 lbs plus 10 during the month of March on my own and 25 inches working out. So I feel great about that. This fill feels better. No negative restriction, but definately satisfied and not hungry after my small portion meal. Since I am taking my grandson back to Md in 2 weeks and will be gone til Sept 1, I wanted my fill to be on target before I left. We will see what happens over the next 2 weeks.

Good luck with your workouts. I am staying on track with mine, taking my grandson (7) to the kids center every day so I can still get it in, and adjusting it so I don't get use to it . I have one of those systems that has to have constant change or it stahls.

sugr, yoga allows me to slow down and take it easy for a while, to find myself back in myself instead of being pulled in all different directions at once. Plus it stretches my overstressed joints, and is good for me in terms of burning calories (some routines).

I love it.

Fenton, thanks, I think I will move it to the top of my list of things to try next week, I never workout on weekends. I have always been a very hyeractive person, and they say I don't know how to enjoy the quiet stillness, which is true, I have to be in constant motion, it seems to run in my family. My oldest daughter has actually forced herself to take quiet time everyday since she was in high school and now does it for her 3 boys so they can learn to relax, calm themselves, and enjoy the quiet peace . It is amazing how it affects them.

I will let you what I think of it as it journey into it. Sugrbear

Hey, enjoylife, what did you decide on the Urban Rebounder?? did you get one? I thought of you tonight as I watched my neighbors kids and grandkids out jumping on their big trampoline at 10:30 pm yelling and screaming having a blast. Sugrbear

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
