Well I was banded on the 14th...

I arrived at day surgery at 5:45am..IV by 6:50am...rolled to surgery at 8:40am...was in surgery for over 6 hrs...previous abdominal surgeries caused complications...

Woke up to completely numb arms and hands...kinda scared me.

Not to bad on pain...really was suprised about that.

I too had trouble sleeping the first 3 nights as I've never slept on my back.

Five days in and I can finally feel my arms and hands but still my thumbs feel like their asleep. Dr says its because of the position i was in for so long in surgery.

No pain, only took 3 or 4 pain pills post op. Just a uncomfortable "twinge" at the port site when I lay down or get up out of bed.

Haven't felt hungry and basically force myself to drink one shake a day.

The positive side is that I lost 14.5 lbs during the two week diet before the surgery and have lost another 8.5 lbs since. I check my blood glucose 4 times a day and it hasn't been over 155 since the surgery. It usually was in the 300 range.

So I'm pleased with this so far, and I was a self=pay...$16,000 bucks.

Do want to say "sorry" to the guy who got cancelled because mine went so long...hate that you went through everything and then get sent home and rescheduled.

Thanks to Dr. Cernero in Sherman, Tx. for working so hard...

Weight first Dr. visit = 349

Day of surgery = 334.5

Today = 326

Just realized that my post could scare some and I dont want that...

My complications were caused by two previous abdominal surgeries...one for a colon surgery and then another for a hernia from that colon surgery.

I had a lot of scar tissue from what the doctor told me...also because I'd had part of my colon removed everything was as he put it "strecthed out" from my colon being smaller and pulling the stomach down....

My results were not typical and I've never read anything even close here so dont let my experience worry you if your waiting to have yours done.

Even if I knew what was gonna happen i would still do it again...

I'm getting skinny and thats the whole deal...

Pretty nifty about those blood glucose levels. Mine dropped off right away, too -- I never went back on meds to control it.

I hope your recovery is speedy!

Hey Bill,

Glad to hear that you came out of the surgery ok.

I was the one that got bumped that day, but its ok. Dr. Cernero came in and talked to us (my wife and I) about it and we rescheduled for the following Friday.

I had my surgery that day and everything went great.

Its great to hear from you. Hope you continue doing so good.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
