Hi Angie,

I just "joined" today when I saw your post. I just got referred to Dr Farries last month by my family Dr. I started out being referred to the Weight Wise program in Edmonton and waited about 13 months to hear that they were basically only accepting patients from Capital Health Region (which I am not in) so I would remain on the wait list for who knows how long. Anyway, I read on anther forum about Dr. Farries in Red Deer and had my Dr. send in my info. They contacted me a couple weeks later saying they were reworking their program and would need the info resent as they were currently booking for consultations from a list of about 200+ patients. My Dr. sent in the info in the next morning and we were told I was 100th on the list and it would be 4-5 months before I would get in (I'm finding out the more I read that this isn't that long!) They said I would then need to see him once a month for 4 - 6 months and then have the scope & test & everything before booking surgery. So I am gathering from this that I could have my surgery within a year if everything goes as they say. I am also on the cancelation list so I may get in sooner. I'm not 100% sure of this but I don't think he has done alot of lap bands and I think he is pretty new to laproscopic RNYs as well. Sounds like he has done lots of open RNYs but just started lap.

Hope this helps!:D

Hi there, I am just new to this and hoping soon to get the surgery. I was just referred to Dr. Farris by my doctor. I tried to get into the Calgary program, but they are only taking people from the Calgary Health Region. Has anyone seen Dr. Farris yet? I do know that he does the gastric bypass, as I had a room mate get that done. Any more info on him would be great! Thanks

Hi Jogirl. I was referred to Dr. Farries back in May and haven't really heard anything yet but it has only been 3 months. My Dr's office called to check on things and they were told that they were waiting for the OR schedule (or something like that) for this fall before they could book anymore consultations so I am hoping to get in by November. Weird thing is my dad just went to his family dr to see about a colonoscopy and he just got booked in October to see Dr. Farries. They must have to book his WLS around other general surgeries. I still haven't ruled out self paying in Ontario or Montana, I'm just not sure how long I am willing to wait!

Hello All,

Does anyone know of any Dr's in Canada who do fills and use floroscopy? I don't know if I could trust anyone to do a fill without that, how woudl they know how much to fill and if they got it in the right spot and not puncture the port tube? Any thougths.. I've had one fill so far and am at a plateau and would like another fill soon.. Can anyone reccommend someone they can trust.. Will any of the fill Dr's do fills from those who had surgery in Mexico?

Thanks.

Hi BGP,

I know that Dr. Descouteaux in Calgary will take on Dr. Ortiz's patients, as that is who I have decieded who to go to. The really nice lady that answers his phones, says that Dr. Descouteaux has no problem in taking Ortiz patients, as she has only ever heard great things about the clinic and doctors down there. That is all I know for Calgary doctors.

To BGP

I'm in disagreement with you about floro. I would rather sneak up on good restriction based on how I felt, rather than what is seen on a screen. I also am not a fan of that much exposure to x-rays. Floro might be worthwhile if someone does not have a comprehensive aftercare plan and wants to get the biggest bang for their "fill" buck...so to speak.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
