How Do You Cope?

Recommended Posts

I was just banded Wednesday the 14th and I am fairly sure the swelling in my tummy has gone down because I am STARVING. My Dr. has us on a clear liduid diet for two weeks after surgery. (I can start adding an egg per day on day 14.)

My question to y'all is how do you cope with being hungry when you're not supposed to eat and others in your house are cooking? My husband made a scrambled egg with toast this morning and it was SO HARD not to have an egg with him!!! HELP!!!!

I would call your doctor's office and ask what's going on. Honestly, I wasn't hungry for 2 weeks after my surgery, and all I was taking in was 2 diluted slim fasts and lots of coffee. I wasn't allowed soft foods until 2 weeks after my surgery.

I was hungry, too, but was only suppose to be on a clear liquid diet for 4 days. But since I hate broth and can only somewhat stand sugar-free Jello I went without eating. The first couple of days were the worse but then they got better. 2 WEEKS without eating just doesn't seem right to me...maybe you should call your dr?

My doctor's office keeps newly banded patients on liquids for 2 weeks to decrease the chances of slippage and to let the stomach heal from the surgery.

My surgeon also told me that you'd be surprised how long your body can survive off of the fat that is stored.

Here's how I'm coping:

1. When my husband wants to cook meat (right now I can't have that) I ask him to grill it outside on the deck on the BBQ. That helps with the smell.

2. He's helping clean up his dishes more than before. It's hard to clean up the dirty dishes when everything smells so good.

3. I don't go in the kitchen when he's cooking his dinner. (I ususally cook dinner, but until I can eat regular foods again - he's on his own)

4. I make sure I have my dinner (Broth, Soup, etc.) before he eats. That way I'm full when he's ready to eat. Kind of bites that we're not eating together right now, but it's just a temporary situation.

5. I tell myself that I can do this. It's just for a few weeks. Suck it up and get over it.

6. I might whine. But just for a little bit.

7. And the old standby. I tell myself, "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels".

What did your Doc. classify as "clear liquids" .. everyone seems to have a different idea.

Ring you clinic and ask if you can have thin creamy Soups, like Tomato, pumpkin, etc. That is what I lived on for my 2 week liquid phase (with lots of cracked fresh pepper for added taste.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
