Fills...from restriction to no restriction

Recommended Posts

I was just banded on 5/9 but as I read about fills it gets confusing. I am wondering why if you have a fill and you have restriction after the fill why is it that in a couple weeks you don't? What causes that? Anyone know?

It has happened to me, and I think it is because anytime you have a fill, you also have some swelling, due to the band being altered. So after a week or 2 the swelling goes down and for that reason some people lose restriction. Hope that helped!

It's totally happened to me too. I don't really know why though. Also after a fill when you lose some weight, the fatty deposit around your stomach gets smaller and your band is around the deposit so as that gets smaller, the band gets looser. For me I didn't lose a lot of weight between fills, and I am still working towards that "sweet spot", so I agree that it's probably more about the swelling, at least at first!

I had one of the girls at the fill center i use explain it to me like this........she likened the lap band to that of a belt. As a person loses weight the belt would become loser an there fore need tightened. So as we lose weight we are losing what i guess is a fat pad around our stomach wich is making the band loser there fore lessening restriction. Seemed to make sense to me.

It is pretty well covered by other people above. There are two primary reasons, initial swelling post fill goes down after a time and the fat around your stomach diminishes.

Some people have also mentioned that your fill can "evaporate" over time. However, I asked my physician and she said that eventhough it can happen, it is a very small amount over a very long time so the difference is too small to be noticed unless you are in maintenance mode and do not go in for fills for over a year.

I personally have had 5 fills, and my restriction can vary from day to day. My Dr said that is a normal occurance. Your' body does many things for many reasons having to do with fluids, what you ate yesterday etc. So although i do have restriction, at times i can eat more then others. And I'm sure other ppl would say the same as my friends who have been banded also have the same things happening. GL

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
