just trying to stay afloat.....

Recommended Posts

hello all,

I am just getting the ball rolling on the way to getting lap band surgery. It has been quite the process. I am going to get the surgery done at the Barix clinic in Ypsilanti michigan. My insurance covers it with six months of documented diet from my PCP with a nice emobossed letter head note. I actually had to switch PCP. My original one wanted me to see a $600 month dietician. Hmmmm I think they might be trying to help each other pay off their vacation homes. My new PCP is on board and hopefully this will be done sooner than later. I just wanted to say that all of your posts are mad helpful. I read them at night after work and they keep me positive and hopeful.

My first question of many to come is if anyone has had the psych evaluation what was it like? I have mine scheduled for this Friday and I just want to make sure that nothing interrupts the process. Thanks again for all your honesty and courage.

For me the pysch evaluation was an enjoyable experience. My doctor (Dr Solomon - how cool is that?) was a nice, professional man. He asked me a variety of questions about my weight, history, who my support would come from etc. He then asked me to look at a series of "ink spots" to tell him what I saw in each card and then I had to look at some real pictures and give him a story line, plot and outcome. It was a very interesting experience. I am sure everyone's technique and procedures are different but I left feeling like I wouldn't mind seeing him again!!! Before I left he gave me some personal feedback from my interaction with him which was very comforting and encouraging to me. I don't even think he knew how much it meant to me. But I did walk back to my car with big smile on my face!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
