Can you still take xenical aftere surgery

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone continued to take diet pills after surgery and before their first fill. Such as Xenical or ALLI, were there any side effects?

Yes you can still take xenical if you can get the pill(s) down. I do it when i cheat on my diet.

Ideally, you wont need to anymore, the whole point of being banded is not having to do that stuff any more.

Although I think its cruel not to prescribe an appetite suppressant for the pre op diet, lol.

I take it whenever I want, I just open the pill and dump it towards the back of my throat with a drink. I've had no problems. I havent had a fill yet so I am eating too much.

Thank you every body for the quick responses. I am starving here with no fills but I am really trying not to over eat. I am really thinking abou the xenical until my first fill... but I wll ask my doctor tomorrow just to be on the safe side

Let us know what he says. I have almost a full box of Alli that never really got used before but now that I have the band (and when I start real food), maybe it would come in handy until my first fill or two start working.

Thanks in advance!

I'd also like to add that, while obvious to many (though a good reminder for others), Xenical and Alli only 'work' when you've eaten food that has some amount of fat in it.

Therefore, it's completely unproductive to take the pills if you're just having a fat-free popsicle or something else that has no fat or almost no fat. If you were to take the Xenical and Alli in these cases, you'd just be wasting your money.

So make sure to only use them when they'll actually aid your weight loss.

Good luck!!! :crying:

Okay, just to be clear...........Xenical is a fat blocker NOT an appetite suppressant. Also with the band we are already giving up certain nutrients that our bodies need therefore we must take supplements. How do we know if the fats that the xenical block aren't the good fats our bodies rely on??? I would say consult your surgeon. ALSO, I am sorry to sound like I am preaching but when you chose the life style of being banded you knew there were certain things you should no longer eat. If you do, don't cheat do the healthy thing and hit an extra mile on the tread mill..... Not judging, I am just saying! Good luck to you all!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
