Gaining Weight For Surgery!!!????

Recommended Posts

My BMI is almost 39 and I was denied with UHC for no co-morbitites. What are my chances of getting approved if I gain the 10 lbs needed to be a BMI of 40. I do not want to gain and then get denied again and be even fatter!! Anyone who has gained weight after denial please let me know if you were approved. thank you soooooo much:lol:

Your 5 year weight history may play as a factor when they look at your records.

I was 1 pound short of being 35 BMI with High Blood Presure - so I made sure the day I met for the first time with the doctor I wore HEAVY clothes.

I agree with TD. Review your 5 year history very carefully and document each and every weight loss attempt and results. Document family health history as well. I would not seek to gain weight. You are fortunate to have no comorbidities. Hopefully, surgical intervention can prevent them. Good Luck to you!

I gainied weight to get the approval. However, I also could show a history of weight gain and loss through many programs such as LA Weight Loss, Nutri-System, Weight Watchers, ect ect. Thank God I had kept records, because the insurance asked for them. My doctor wrote an awesome letter. We started working the insurance company first of February and I got approval the first week in May.

were you denied first, I have a diet history etc and I am 10 lbs short of having a BMI of 40, I am afraid if I gain the weight they will just deny again?

I wouldn't go with gaining weight, I'd fight it though.

I had a BMI of 39 and was approved through UHC without gaining any weight. Try your best to get approved at what you're at now. Good luck.

I had a bmi of 38, and I gained about 20 pounds. Then I had to lose 5% for insurance, but I got my band 3 months ago.

were you denied at 38 and then gained the weight to get to a bmi of 40? I was denied at 38.4 which is 10 lbs away from 40, I am wondering should I gain the weight or try a rebuttal letter for approval? by your ticker it looks like you are doing great, congrats!!!!

No, I was not denied before I gained weight. My doctor told me because I have no health problems I would be turned down unless I had a BMI of 40. I have been on every diet known to man and lost the weight, but regained it and then some. I had been regaining from my last attempt when we started looking into this. I did not go to the insurance company until I was at 40 BMI and growing! With the history I had of weight loss failures helped me. Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
