My insurance requires a year of trying to lose weight on my own. Seeing a Dr every 3 months in a structured plan. Okay, I can do that. I will probably lose weight too. I've done it, oh, let's see, ABOUT 300 TIMES!!!

Now the problem: I'm sure you have all lost weight on your own before you got banded. Probably as many times as I have. BUT, if I lose more than 15 pounds in that year, then my BMI would be less than 40 which is below the insurance company's standard for getting the band. Sooooo, What do I do?

Dr wants me to join weight watchers, but that's going to be hard seeing that I really don't want to lose much weight. I could always lose, I could never keep it off, and I never lost as much as I needed to lose.

Ask and make sure that they will not use the weight of your intital appointment for the insurance approval... I asked the same thing about what if I go under the 40 BMI with the presurgery diet.

As long as they use the intial weight it does not matter how much I loose presurgery, or even b4 I got approved for the surgery...

maybe yours will be the same...

crossing fingers for ya

That is exactly what you should tell your DR. I mean if we could loose the darn weight then geeeee we would have kept it off that last 100 times we went down the scale. The whole reason for the band is to be the tool you use to get fills and get it tighter when your starting to feel like your eating more then you should again. It is an ugly cycle and it is the tool to keep you on track. I had gotten a fill that was too tight so I went threw 3 months of hardly getting anything down with out it hurting and having to PB. I went and had half of my fill removed...........oh momma it was like a kid in a candy store. Let me tell you that the first place I went was Jack in the Box to get a double cheeseburger and it was the best thing I had ever eaten.............but it went down hill from there. Now I did not have the STOP BUTTON I had before and I just ate and ate and ate and ate and binged for three weeks..................12 pounds gained and back to the doctors office I went and got another fill. Just not as tight as before but enough to feel that stop button again so after a couple of bites I start to feel the tightness and set my fork down and wait until it is gone then a couple more small bites. It takes about 35-45 min to get a small meal down but because I am not woofing it down in 10 min like I used too it makes me fuller for longer and I am okay with the small side salad now. You use the tool for what it is suppose to be used for PORTION SIZE. If it is truley what you want honey then you fight for it!!!!!!! FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!!!!!!!

Losing weigh can make the surgery easier. We can all take it off, but not keep it off. As long as the insurance agrees, the more you take off the better pre surgery, and then with the band in place you won't gain it back.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
