Dh got his Surgery Date!!!

Recommended Posts

Well, his time has come, my dh will be having surgery June 16! He was kinda hesitant, but he's seen my ups and downs, so he knows what to expect. I can't wait, just because I know how happy he will be, and for me to have a band buddy in my house!!! YEAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Does anyone else have an "in-house" band buddy???

WOOHOOOOOOOO, that's awesome sweetie. My hubby didn't get the band, but he did the SB diet with me and has continued to go from 248 to 214 .. but it has been so hard.. but it has helped because we pretty much eat the same things... so it is nice having somebody do the journey with you.

That is so awesome!! It would be so nice to have someone going through the same things in the house. My DH weighs like 140 and has forever so he doesn't have a clue what it is like to be overweight.

Oh...so glad you've posted this thread!! My hubby had the gastric sleeve 3 weeks ago. He was only 50 pounds over weight but has co-morbidities. I was hesitant about him getting the surgery but he was pretty insistant and insurance approved it. Of course, since he's a guy, he's lost 38 pounds in 3 weeks...ya, it's taken me over 3 months to lose that much!! At first I was kinda irritated and jealous, but then I pulled my head out of my a$$ and realized he deserves health just as much as I do and how great is it that we can have this lifestyle together!! We had our first "dinner" together last night and we were laughing at our teeny plates and portion sizes. Even though he's like 12 pounds from his goal weight and I have like 50-60 more to go (grrrrr), I am very grateful and extraordinarly lucky to have a wonderful husband and the grateful gift of health!!

Valvinnek - that's fantastic news! Tell him congrats! And enjoy your healthy lifestyles together.

marathinner - good for him! We can put his picture on a dart board when we get frustrated - LOL Seriously, how is the sleeve. I was really curious about it but know almost nothing.

Put it this way we got fat together (he was very athletic, (football & baseball) and I was a gymnast until I was 18) . After high school we would workout together. This is all before we started dating. We didn't see eachother for a year, then when we did start dating we no longer worked out together, but we would eat toghther! So I am really excited for this!!

Oh, and his bmi is about the same as mine was, like 41. He's 315 (6'3) and I was 250 (5'4). So our goal amounts are pretty similar, but like you marathinner, I know he'll lose more quickly, eventhough I went first!!!!

:woot: Well I think that's GGGRRREEAATT!! My DH didn't need anything but he was right there with me eating the same things I was on the pre-op and post-op diet! It was so fun and he also knew then a part of what we all have had to go through. While we were still on the post-op diet he had a family doc appt and our doc commented on his weight loss and he told her he was following my diet to support me but he is sure getting sick of chicken and fish!:D She just laughed and told him to hang in there..now you know how hard it can be for some people to lose weight! So I think this is really terrific for Val and Marathinner!! :)

I really didn't know much about the sleeve prior to my hub getting the surgery. There are definite pro's and con's. It's sorta like a "happy medium" between bypass and the band. The upside of the sleeve is that you don't have a foreign object in you and don't have to deal with fills. The downside is it's a one shot deal and if you don't eat the right foods and the right portions over time the stomach will stretch and you're at risk for gaining weight back. I think the sleeve was a good choice for my hubby and the band was a good choice for me. It's all good!!

Hooray for your hubbies! I can't think of a better thing than having an SO who understands your new eating habits like that. You and Marathinner are both blessed!

I was the guinea pig for my dh chicken. He went through all the preop in feb when I did and backed out. He is finally reconsidering on his own and I can't wait. He has a lot of co morbidities and it makes me worry. He lost some weight since I am cooking and eating differently , but he now realizes it isn't coming off on its own.I can't wait to have a band buddy in my home!!!

Congratz to your hubby Valvinnek! It would be great to have a "band-buddy" in the house . . . but I'm in the same boat as Mom2_4, my husband is about 145 pounds - in his clothes, soaking wet, lol  I'd love to weigh less than my husband someday . . . wishful thinking, I'm gonna be happy if I get near my goal weight! :rolleyes2:

Good luck to your hubby and you Valvinnek (Marathinner too!) . . . it's just not fair how men lose weight faster, is it?! Or age better . . . I go to the beauty salon, have my hair highlighted to hide the grays/whites . . . my husband likes the gray in his hair, it makes him look "distinguished" (and it does too dammit! :target:). I'm struggling with this weight loss to hopefully make me look younger (and healthier of course) . . . hubby currently shaved off his mustache, now he looks 10 years younger. (grumbles).

Don't get me wrong, I love my hubby, he's my best friend after all these years, and he's very loving and supportive of me . . . I just wanna know why MEN HAVE IT SO MUCH EASIER!!!! :P

(*koff* recomposes self) ok sorry, small rant there . . . I'm ok now, really! :bananapowerslide:

I found a great way to get even with SOs that don't need to lose weight or even just ones you want to torture like I do mine. My hubby needs to lose some weight now since his brain tumor. They had him on steroids for so long and he gained about 20 pounds. Due to that and the cancer we're been trying to feed the whole family healthier. So, I found him a truly healthy wonderful drink called Kombucha. It tastes like vinegary, spoiled algae tea - LMAO. Now, whenever he acts up, I just tell him I'm gonna get him some more Kombucha and he shapes right up.:crying:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
