I was banded with the Realize band yesterday. My doctor told me there is virtually no difference between the two, and he showed me a stack of research and literature to back him up. Of course, every doctor has their own opinion and you have to trust your own doctor.

My doctor gave me a choice of which band, and he gave me links to the website for each band. You can only access the detailed part of the websites if you have your doctor's access number. I chose the Realize band because it has a really good website with places to track your food diary, your weight, etc. But as far as I could see both bands really function the same.

May I ask who your doc is? 1500 bands done by a doc in the US is pretty awesome!

My doc had told me that the often when he gets in there, the anatomy of a male requires a large-sized band (used to be the VG, APL, etc...) but one cannot tell for certain until they are looking at your insides. So he has one of each size available and based on the thickness of your stomach muscle, and what length band you'd need he chooses which to use.

In terms of Realize v. LapBand, I think I'm in the middle on that one. They are virtually the same, from what I've read the anchoring system for the port is the biggest difference. The LapBand port is stitched down, the Realize is anchored with hook-like thingies. Hard to describe, but they use a special instrument to secure it, I'd rather be stitched, but does it really matter? Probably not.

And online tracking and support groups are not a dealmaker nor a deal breaker for me. I used to use fitday.com and now am addicted to thedailyplate.com. I come here for my support. I have yet to go to the LapBand site for anything other than to look up a couple specifics.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
