hic-ups

I am newly banded as of 3/21/05 and I have had the hic-ups since surgery. They are not severe or painful, but just annoying. I get them about 4-5 times an hour, and their are only 3-6 at a time. As soon as I realize I have the hic-ups, they stop.

Does anyone else have this? Does anyone know why?

And on another note, I'm pretty new to this message board, but it has been helpful so far. Thanks for all the great info.

Sandra,

It sounds like you are sucking in too much air. Be careful and make sure you try to exhale before talking and eating, this might help.

Hi Sandra,

Welcome to LBT!!!! :)

Ive heard of people getting hiccups as a sign that their pouch is full!

Its true... I think our La Madame/Michelle gets this signal.

I tend to get them more frequently, too, but not as much as you. I think it's common for newly banded people. Everyone has their own remedy but mine never fails me: Hold your breath & count to 10, swallow, cough then breathe normal. Sounds stupid, but it really does work for me.

yup Hiccups are a sign I am full. If I eat another bite I will be sorry. LOL!! They go away on their own though.

Hi,

I was banded on March 18 and yes I get hic cups, but not that often anymore. For me they are a sign that I am full, and if I don't stop I will be sorry too!

How I am sooo glad I did a search on this topic! I get ONE hiccup while Im drinking, (Im one week post op) And I usually stop drinking and then Im fine. I give everything a moments rest and then I go back to sipping. hiccups sound like the magical signal! This is so cool! Cool in the sence that a lot of us seem to have this affect. Much better than some of the other signals I have heard about to tell you youve over filled the pouch....YIKES....

Yep, one BIG hiccup is your diaphragm issuing it's first sign. We sometimes call this a 'soft' stop. If the pouch is full enough, it may continue, eventually, you'll get to the PAIN part, which is considered a 'hard' stop.. Listen to your body. It will often tell you when it's DONE.

Hiccups are my soft stop signal. When eating, if I get the hiccups, I know it's time to stop -- I am full.
