Breastfeeding with the Band?

Recommended Posts

I would def talk to your surgeon. And prob your GYN....my doctor told me though that as long as youre taking in the calories and nutrients for you and baby then you can get a fill- unfill whatever while breastfeeding.

I also went through pre-op, surgery, post op and my first fill all while nursing...TWINS!!!

I do think, however, you shouldn't get a fill until your baby is eating solids well. Exclusively nursing takes a lot out of you....you need nutrition and calories and fat to produce thick, nutritious milk!

Congrats on your baby and nursing. I miss nursing my twins...we stopped at 20 months...one of them kept getting off and saying "Thank you" before running away...it weirded me out!

LOL, Rainer! That makes me laugh. Good for you for nursing twins and sticking with it so long. I am a firm believer that breastfeeding is important, and not just until that first birthday.

To the op: My baby was almost one when I had surgery. We've had no issues with nursing. He eats a lot of solid food, so if I had a baby that was mostly getting their nutrition from nursing, I might hold off on restricting my calorie intake a bit.

I also had concerns about breastfeeding and the surgery, because I know that a decrease in calories can mean a decrease in milk production. But I was banded on 4/17, had my first fill on 5/15, and my 10-month-old is still happily nursing away and seems to be getting enough.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
