Katie,

You might want to take it slow and stick to things that are really liquids like Soup, juice, blended oatmeal, Protein shakes. You really want your stomach to heal. Believe me you only think you are really really hungry but if you fill up on non-calorie liquids when you do eat your Soup you will be surprised how full you feel.

Please Please don't rush yourself, give yourself time to heal, I made the mistake of not following the strict guidelines my doctor gave me and I paid bigtime. I got so sick, that I aggravated my band and made it so tight I couldn't even keep fluids down, I landed myself in the hospital very dehydrated and very ill. It was a very scary experience for me, I thought I was dying. NOt only was this frightning but very expensive that ER visit cost me $14,000, yep twice what I paid for my band. So please be very gentle with yourself and take care of your band. You need to stick with light fluids and then lighter mushies so that your new band can get acquainted with your body and can work for you. It is difficult in the beginning, but it gets better. Good luck to you and take it easy with those meals.

Love,

e

This is a great question. The way I understood it many moons ago when I was first banded is this:

Your stomach is a muscle and as it digests food it churns and moves the food around inside it. If you've just been banded, it's in your best interest to not have your stomach have to work so hard to digest food. Even if you liquify certain foods, your stomach still has to work to digest it. So, that's why they recommend broth and other liquids that don't make your stomach work to digest. You can tear sutures, cause a PB early on that might compromise your band position, etc. Let your stomach heal as best as it can by treating it very very gently.

It's hard, but I promise that you can get through it, and not too long from now you'll wonder what all the fuss was about having to go on liguids.

Good luck,

Megan

Besides all the other great points made here, who would really want to eat liquified hamburger or whatever? Blech. Reminds me of those orange juice commercials with the guy putting fish in the blender. Horrifying.

Katerzz, this will be over soon and you WILL appreciate the good you have done for yourself. Believe it.

I was just babded on 3/2/05. The liquid phase is a hard place to be for all of us at some point or other. The things is. It is really mental, you go by what you are used to eating, and what you are restricted to eating now, and you feel starved. But in all acutality you aren't. It's like have ing a friend come play at your house, she comes and snatcheds a your favorite doll out of your hands, and you fight to nsatch it back, and hold on to it too. The same with food. You want to hold to what you used to be able to eat, have , enjoy. This phase is part of the life change that you will have to make it. I am down 36lbd without a fill, and was told by my Doc to postpone it until next month, because the weight loss has bben so good without one. The band is not going to make you lose weight on it's own. You have to make a conscious effort to follow the rules, and be patient. This to shall pass, and before you know it, you'll be eating solids thinking I remember when I thought that the liquid stage would never end. My advice is to please be patient and follow the doctors rules.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
