Why do you have to do liquids after a fill?

Recommended Posts

You can have anything that passes through a straw. It's only two days, so it's not as bad as the first two weeks after surgery.

As far as "why"... it's obvious... your stomach needs to get used to the new size. Can't just go out and have lunch... it takes time.

I think it's a great tool to get a person to eat better.

Windy,

My surgeon told me because the stomach doesn't like being touched . The liquids give it time to get over it.

Hi everyone, I was banded on 05/08 and doing pretty good. How is everyone doing with the pain....eating...going back to work. I had my 1 wk check up Tuesday kinda early cause I am thinking abt going ahead and go bck to work. I have lost abt 16 lbs that is pre surgery until now. Doctor seems to think I am doing great the only complaint I really have is I have lots of pressure in my chest area it hurts like #?*! when I hiccup..anyone experiencing this pain???!

I was one of the lucky ones that did not have to wait for ever on an approval ...I started the process in March and had the surgery in May...Although my thought process was much much longer I had been thinking abt the bypass for the last 4 years or better.

I hope everyone is doing Great!!!

hey Wayoflife.. congrats on your surgery and wishing you a speedy recovery. i also had the chest pains / indigestion for the first two weeks. felt like i was going to die at times and spent a fortune on rolaids, maalox, and herbal teas.. 2 weeks post op and it is pretty much all gone. now that i have moved to mushies and getting more substance in my stomach. you are going to be bloated for a few weeks. but it will pass and when it does you will feel like a million bucks.

i was initially going for full by-pass, but i am happy with my decision. I also had a great medical team - the entire process start to finish was exactly 6 weeks..

That's a doctor-specific rule. A lot of docs do not require that.

It does make sense to allow your stomach to adjust after a fill though - some people's stomachs get irritated or swollen and need to rest after a fill. Two whole days of liquids seems like overkill, but maybe some people need that.

I don't recall ever having trouble eating fairly normally after a fill. YMMV.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
