in the recovery phase of surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello, my name is Sarah. I'm 34 years old and had surgery on May 7th. I'm back at work but having issues with sitting for a while (it hurts where my port is). Other than that I'm doing fine. I have moved on to the mushy foods and doing fine with it. I'm glad this site is here so I don't have to bother my doctor all of the time; there's some great stuff on here. Thanks for all the comments! I'm learning what to expect and what isn't normal!

Glad to have you Sarah. Welcome to band land.

When I first went back to work I had to be really be careful moving my seat around because the bottom of my desk would irratate were my port was. It heals quickly though.

Can't wait to see you (or read ya) around.

honestly, I'm afraid to get on the scales. I was so excited after the surgery because MY ANKLES were back to normal! Now that I'm back to work, I don't feel as good and my swelling has started again a little in my legs. I think I've lost but am afraid to look. Today is a week after surgery and I feel almost back to normal. I have had such problems losing weight in the past I'm hesitant to look.

I've told my husband that I'm going to wait until my 6 week doctor's appointment.

My legs and ankles were swelling HORRIBLY before surgery. It was scary, really. I have lost 35 lbs and they still swell sometimes, but not nearly at the size or rate as before surgery. When they do start to swell I realize that I need to keep working out. My Dr. says that working out will really help because building muscle in your leg helps push the Fluid out, also having less weight helps the circulation when you are sitting down.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
