Hi, Just thought I would share a thought. I am 3 weeks out, feeling preety good and am in love with SF Grape Koolaide:tt1:. I have no problems getting in the required fluids. My concern is that I should be preparing my self to not drink before, during and just after meals. How??:thumbup: I have been tring and I still reach for a sip. Has the drinking during a meal or even before or immediatly afterward impact your full feeling. I know it is just a knew habit I need to form, I just was wondering if the full feeling was really "washed" away with every sip.

my understanding from my doc/nurse is that having drinks with your meal can cause you to vomit and it could also stretch out the band...

They actually recommended that i start practicing before being banded..that being said..i have been practicing but it is hard. I am better, but i still reach for a glass!!

Basically yes...train yourself not to drink during and immediately after meals.

Eventually you may not be able to drink during meals as the liquid will sit in your chest and may get stuck.

Secondly it pushes the food through the band, which will "wash away" the full feeling.

My doc allows me to drink right up until the time I am getting ready to eat and then i can drink a half hour after.

The best way to train yourself is not to pour a cup of your Koolaid until after you've eaten and definitely don't have a cup of liquids at the table with you.

It works for me.

There is a difference if you drink even right after a meal . or too soon after a meal . Also there is more to the " no drinking" thing than just the full ness. I drink up until my meal comes .

After time this can stretch your pouch . This is my docs reasoning for not doing it.

also when i have GOOD restriction , I tried to drink ONCE after I ate something and thought i was going to DIE !! It was THE WORST Stuck EVER ! PAINFUL. So if you have good restriction you WILL only do it once .

this is what I did , practiced before surgery for months . It becomes a habit.

But here are some tips I used to stop

1. if your at home do not even get a drink when you have a meal . Do not even bring a cup to the table.

2. After eating Set a kitchen timer for 60 mintues , when it goes off then you can drink.

3. if your at a restaurant .. I drink up until my meal comes, when my meal comes I either ask the waitress to take AWAY my cup ( I had to do this in the begining ) or what I do now is ask for a to go cup WITH a top and NO Straw .

4. then write on the cup what time you can drink it (60mintues after you finished your meal )

evenutnally it just becomes a habit and you will start to go "wait i forgot to get a drink " its just a habit you have to break with another habit.

Coltonwade your weightloss numbers are great. What do you eat? As for drinking I have great restriction now and I made the mistake of trying to take a sip of Water with this type of restriction well just like Coltonwade said I was SICK, I have never done that again. You eventually get used to it, just continue to practice. The saying goes practice makes perfect so you will get the hand of it. Good Luck!

Oh thanks. Honestly I eat what ever i want. BUT I do not eat a lot of carbs And have not since my pre op diet .

I have PCOS ( Poly cystic ovarian syndrome ) which is one reason I became obese to begin with . It prevents you from loosing weight . The band is the ONLY way in 10 yrs I was able to lose weight. But Carbs are not good for ppl who have PCOS . So after I was on my low carb high Protein pre op diet I decided it was better to stay off them as much as possible. I cant eat Pasta, bread or rice anyway so its not too difficult.

I eat A LOT OF veggies too . I eat a veggie stir fry mix i make for lunch at LEAST 4 times a week . I eat better now than I ever have. But If I want a piece of cake or chocolate on occasion I will eat that.

I found it to be an okay adjustment. I drink an 8 oz glass of Water about 15 minutes before my meals. This way it tricks my mind a little and I don't feel as thirsty because I just had a glass of water. I find now that by the time an hour rolls around I have forgotten so it is sometimes hard to get my fluids in. I end up drinking quite a bit of water or crystal light in the evenings and the have to be during the night, lol! At least it isn't as bad as being pregnant!!

I drink right up to before eating, because Fluid just drains right through an empty pouch.

Like someone else suggested, the best way to do this is to not have a drink in front of you at your meal. Drinking is automatic otherwise. I'm over 2.5 yrs out and if there's a drink it front of me I still find myself reaching for it.

At a restaurant, try put your drink elsewhere on the table, out of reach.

And then when I finish eating I make a mental note of the time and when I can drink again.

I also drink before eating, then try to stop 5 minutes before. I do not drink during the meal, although on occassion I've had a teeny sip if needed. I definitely wait at least 1/2 hour to drink after a meal - usually an hour... Also - it's never carbonated.:smile2:

So the lap-band is a built in way to keep you from having more than 1 drink when you go out (alcohol or regular), AND I never get coffee or dessert at the end of a meal either. There is just NO room.

Once in a while - if meeting people for drinks/appetizers - I need to choose which I would like to do:Banane34: - and stick with it!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
