Guest Adele Posted September 14, 2003 Hi, my name is Adele. I live in Shaler, a suburb of Pittsurgh, PA and am exited to have my initial evaluation with Dr Papasavas on Thursday, Sept 18th. I became diabetic 10 years ago with the birth of my daughter and am on high doses of insulin injections which are becoming less and less effective. My A1C has been 11 to 12 for the past few years. I am only 5'2" tall and weigh 212 lbs with a BMI of around 38. My doctor at the Joslin Diabetes Center feels that I am a good candidate for this surgery and feels strongly that I may not need the insulin after a decent weight loss. I also have asthma and my insurance is Aetna HMO where the BMI may fall between 35-40 with a co-morbidity. So I am hopeful approval will not be difficult. Although I am blessed to even have this opportunity...I know patience will be a virtue with all of the tests and appointments I will hopefully have. I have been large all my life...my twin weighed 28 pounds in first grade...the nuns carried her from class to class thinking she was too fragile....me. I walked on my own~!!! Wish me luck! --Adele
dishdiva 5 Posted September 15, 2003 Congratulations, Adele, on taking this big step for your health. We see so many stories of people who have chronic health problems that improve dramatically with weight loss. Good luck at your initial appointment.
