What happens during an echocardiogram?

Recommended Posts

I have an EKG tomorrow afternoon and an echocardiogram coming up. I've had an EKG before but never an echo. What do they do during the test? I'm thinking I'm having one done because I took Phen-Fen and heart disease runs in my family. I hope everything comes out okay.

Isn't that just were they put the sticky plugs on your body (mainly around your heart and chest) and check your heart waves, pretty sure it is as I've had about 5 of them done. It's probably just to make sure your heart is up for the operation and that it's working as it should

If you've had children and had a sonogram done it's basically the same except they run the probe over your heart. not painful in the least

The echocardiogram is the ultrasound type test, it can last for up t0 20 minutes or so depending on how quickly they're able to fin what they're looking for. For the EKG they put 12 or so little stickers(leads) on your chest, arms and legs to get a reading of your heart. I takes like 3 minutes.

Thanks for the replies. Sonogram of the heart I understand since I had those done when I was pregnant. I thought it was more involved since I have to see a cardiologist for the echocardiogram but have the EKG done by a nurse.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
