kagoscuba 0 Posted May 22, 2008 Yep, some of us have the triathlon bug. In September I weighed 265 with a BMI of exactly 40, hypertension, and sleep apnea. Today I weigh 205 have dropped 6 inches off my waist, and I've competed in my first 5k since leaving the military 13 years ago. I'm signed up for th eNJ State Triathlon in July (Sprint distance), and I cannot wait. I'm riding and running now, and in June I plan to add swimming. Tonight was a 40 minute Fartlek (speed session) that I did for the first time. I think I was less tired after the 5k!! By July I should be well below my initial goal of 199 pounds...perhaps at my final of 185. If nothing else I plan on being able to say: I am a triathlete. It is better to finish last than not to finish at all, and it is better not to finish than never to have started. (from Triathlon site)
wnt2lose 0 Posted May 22, 2008 What wonderful tips and advice from everyone! I am even more motivated to get started. I even dusted off my bike tonight and rode my 5k route. Baby steps right? Now to get started on the swimming. Soon our neighborhood pool will be open and they have lap swimming during the noon hour so I will need to start doing that. I can do this! My first tri is 400 yard swim but i know its going to be different to being in the pool. Hoping i can do 30-40 laps by then.
whosyadaddy 0 Posted May 22, 2008 I HATE that i will have to do it on my moutain bike. Would much prefer a road bike or one of those flat bar bikes with skinny tires. but no money for that!

wnt2lose 0 Posted May 27, 2008 Thanks for helping to inspire me to train for a triathelon as well! I finally made it all the way through the couch to 5k program and can now run 5K without walking! Last night I rode 10 miles on my bike. Like I said, now I just need to get swimming! I also have a mountain bike, although it is pretty light. Kat W thanks for the link to beginner Triathlete! I've been hooked since! Good luck to everyone. Whosyadaddy, when is your tri? Keep us posted on your progress!

UT LB Loser 0 Posted July 7, 2008 So, how is everyone's training going? I know Whosya finished his first tri and is going to be doing another on Saturday the 12th. But how are the rest of you? Still making progress? There is another thread on this site that is pretty active on triathlon training. Here's a link: http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f81/training-triathlon-37626/ Check it out and join in the discussion! I have completed one triatlon and ran a 5K on the 4th. I'll be doing my next tri on Saturday the 12th. I've been through the course twice and am way excited!! My focus this time is on improving my times in all 5 timed areas. My transitions can really be improved!!! Triathlon was such a scary word 2 months ago. Now it has become a fixation! It is so much fun! The people I've met since I started training for my first 5K have been amazing. Both on the internet and those I've met at events!! There is more support in this community than in any other activity I've been involved in. When I've been walking on a run, or stopped while rubbing out a cramp, the comments and encouragement from people who I've never met are incredible. These folks know to some degree what I am feeling at that moment. They've pushed through that same pain. My Mantra is JFDI - Just Focus and Do It. That is what it takes to do this, or anything in life for that matter. Just freaking do it!!!!! Have a great day!!!
whosyadaddy 0 Posted July 7, 2008 Yeah i go on both. Here is my 5k pic. Something really cool: I found there is a USA National Team Coach living in my home town! He has a little group on Wednesdays at a local track he meets about 5 or 6 ppl at and they train together. So i minght try going to that on Wednesday. He is also a USA Swim Team Coach! How cool is that?
