Help!! someone!!!PLEASE!!!

I am clueless as to how much to eat. I full full before I even start because of this gas crap!! Is that normal. I had surgery on Thursday. I had some potatos with gravy for dinner with my family, and now I am burping a lot, except it doesnt come all the way up, and it hurts really bad. Please someone tell me if this is normal. there is no way I could thin out the potatos anymore. I mashed them in my mouth until they were like milk. You guys are the only the only people I know to ask that have an answer, and I appreciate it so much. You guys are soo much help!! I soo dont want to mess this up. When did you guys start trying mushies, such as a soft egg, or soggy Cereal? ? Thanks in advance for your help!!:welldoneclap::laugh::Banane53::laugh::Banane44::laugh::lol::laugh::woot:

I'm confused as well. You should have been given a diet to follow post-op. Call your surgeon's office ASAP and ask them for the guidelines.

I agree. You should NOT be eating potatoes and gravy at this point. My guideline were to be on full liquids for 2 weeks, THEN mushies for 2 weeks.

I'm concerned that you went home from surgery without having ANY idea when or what to eat. :welldoneclap:

my surgeon allows mushies day 5 and and soft foods day 10. However I am not hungry at all so I will be waiting a little longer than recommended.

willsmommy, you may be full and just not realize it. Sometimes I am so full I can't get my Water in. One thing I had to learn very quickly is that it's not the same "full feeling" than when I stuffed my face with fast food pre-band.

I am being banded on Friday. My surgeon has been going over the menu with me for months, as has my lifestyle coach. I am required to do a clear liquid pre-op diet. After I have had the surgery, I am to follow the following diet.

Phase I: Clear Liquids (1st week)

Phase IIA: Full Liquids (2nd week)

Phase IIB: pureed (3rd week)

Phase III: Adaptive/Soft (4th and 5th weeks)

Phase IV: Stabilization/Regular (6th week)

Clear Liquids are considered: Apple, grape and cranberry juices, clear beefs, chicken and vegatab le brothers. Unsweetened coffee or tea, sugar-free Gelatin, sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free frozen jice bars, Gatorade, All Sport, Propel, flavored waters, Crystal Light.

Full Liquids are considered: Skim milk, low-fat cream Soups, sugar-free pudding, sugar-free custard, Protein shakes, no added sugar carnation instant Breakfast, Protein powders.

pureed foods are: Yogurt, cottage cheese, scramb led egges or egg beaters, pureed beef, chicken, turkey, canned tuna or chicken white fish, baby food meets. These foods should be "spoon thick" and seasoned to taste.

Adaptive/Soft Phase foods are: Tuna fish, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, cooked vegatables, and canned fruits. As well as white fish, chopped chicken, Deli sliced turkey breast, sliced/grated low-fat cheese, hard boiled or poached eggs, Soups, tofu, mashed or baked potatoes, Cereal soaked with milk, boiled pasted, canned fruit, fresh fruit (without the skin and no citrus fruit), cooked vegetables.

Stabilization Phase is the phase where you will be able to eat foods of a regular consistency but in small portions and cut very small.

My diest says full liquids the day after surgery!! I was only on full liquids the day before and day of surgery. Included in what to eat when you go home was mashed potatos very thin, juice, Water, Protein Drinks, cream Soup and stuff like that. Do you think that is too much??

is the gas think normal?? I dont have it in my shoulders anymore, it feels like it is right where the band should be. You guys are soo great!!

you had your sugery thurs? you should be on clear liquids, teas, Jello. after about 10 days mushies.

your surgery should have told you. your stomach needs to heal.

Willsmommy...I am in the same boat as you. SHOOTTTT the hospital gave me custard four hours out of surgery.....

I was told full liquids and that I would "KNOW" when my body was ready for pureed and mushies....guess wht..it didn't.

SO I am going to follow the advice here..it cannot hurt...and stick with full liquids for at least another week or even two.

willsmommy, not all surgeons put everyone on the same diet, for example my dr puts his patients on liquids for 48-72 hrs after surg then mushy food for next 4 wks so you can heal, I will say mash potatoe and gravy is not on the list to start. you shld be looking at things like, a scrambled egg, yogurt, cottage cheese, mashed broccolli, carrots, sweet potatoe is much easier and better for you than white potatoe, canned boneless skinless salmon with a tiny bit mayo, you want to be able to eat comfortably and heal, don't overfill your new pouch, you probably wont feel any restriction for a while and it can be easy to over extend it eating the wrong thing. Your dr may want you on mushy food, but stay away from white starchy food, yeast and gassy.. go Protein first,,then veggie, then if room fruit. right now make sure you mash, chew slow and very well, I would stay away from graveies and sauces for now too. You need to get use to just having the band put in and healing,, and your mind is adjusting to your band too remember. Good luck, but definately call "your" Dr office and clarify what they want for "you" on their program. then put a plan together for yourself. ok, goodluck

willsmommy,,, if you don't feel you are ready for mushy real food, just back down to your liquids, and Soups, liq Protein Shakes, yogurts, Jello, sugar free pudding (if you can stand it),,,then slowly add the mushy stuff, like maybe for one meal at a time until you feel more ready. Cambells has a realy good Yellow Butternut Squash Soup in the box which I found was perfect for this stage and taste great. .

My question is should I still be feeling like I cant hold anything when I havent had anything. I know that Im not drinking as much Water and stuff as I should. I just dont know if I am full, or if my stomach is just swollen. When does it start to get better. This rolling gas stuff is killing me, I actually had one of those "why did I do this to my body and my family" nights last night. My 18 month old woould not even kiss me goodbye this morning because I havent been able to play with him and take care of him since Thursday, my husband is doing great. Its just so hard to get used to this. Is ot always going to hurt like this. I can deal with the surgery pain, its just this gas..........uugghhhhh!!!!!!! Im sorry that I am whining, This is a great place to do it because you guys dont have to continue reading unless you want to. Thats whats so great about most of you, you will read it and respond! You guys are great!!

I can have thinned mashed potatoes when I start my full liquid diet next week for 2wks. But keep in mind, potatoes do cause gas!!

Do you have a nutritionist working with your doc you can check in with? I do and she's very helpful!!

I personally would stay away from mashed potatoes and gravy. You aren't even one week out yet! Your body just went through a major insult and it needs time to heal.

I experienced quite a bit of pain and pressure post-op for about a week and a half. It didn't take very much liquid for me to be full.

Listen to your body. If you're feeling full and tight, your body is telling you it needs more time. If you feel hungry, drink. If you're not hungry, don't eat jut because it's mealtime. You now have a different agenda and it's not to join the family at mealtime...it's to heal your body.

You are probably experiencing some swelling from the placement of the band which will make you feel...not hungry. This is also part of the joy of the band -- not feeling hungry.

You're just a few days post-op. Of course, you cannot tumble around with your toddler. I spent my first two days post-op camped out in my bed barely awake. The next few days were spent trying like crazy to get in enough Water. I'm now 12 days post-op and still get more tired than usual, have some pain at my incision sites and still cannot always get in all of the water/protein that I'm supposed to.

Be patient with yourself. Your body is healing.

I do think you should consider going to liquids, but not without talking with your doctor or nutritionist first. I had only Water my first five days. I'm now on Protein shakes and water for two weeks. I honestly have not been hungry. (Mind hunger and cravings are another story!)

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
