Side pain...looking for input

Recommended Posts

My side pain took a turn for the worst last night. I went to bed with the left side pain. The pain started to get intense and before I knew what hit me it had radiated all around my abdomen! It was across my abdomen below my chest and all the way around my back. I slimmed like a faucet! (sorry tmi). The pain subsided and the slimming stopped so I went back to bed. 5 min later this whole episode repeated itself only the pain was worst than the first time. I woke my husband up who kept asking me to explain what was going on. I couldn't talk, it hurt to talk. Again it subsided and I went back to bed. I told my husband if it happened again to call an ambulance that I couldn't tolerate another episode. We just laid there waiting.... I woke up this morning and haven't had another episode but the left pain is still here. I called today and Iam going in at 1pm. I will let you know what they say!! Iam scared. I don't want anything to be wrong with my band. THIS SUCKS.

Hello everyone i'm 12 weeks out and started having this pain a few days ago. It's just a slight mild pain not bad enough to take meds.

My surgeon said that the left sided pain is usually muscle related and will subside but did say I should have told him when it first began. Although he said my symptoms of the intense, radiating pain with slimming did not sound like a muscle. He did say he was stumped. He did an upper GI which showed my band is fine, not slipped at all. He is sending me for a cat scan on friday at 1pm. He wants to rule out injury to my spleen and or pancreas. He says there's always a possibility it was injured during surgery. While in the waiting room I was talking with 2 other women who also had left side pain!!!

I will let you know what the cat scan says. I go back on the 18th. The results should be back to him by then. I just hope it doesn't come back in the mean time! He said to call him if and when it happens.

Iam down 18lbs in 5 wks! That's a plus. I was going in for a fill next wk but he said no fills till he figures out what's wrong.

For all those having it, mention it to your surgeons asap. Let them know.

Okay I think I found the answer or for me at least! The top doctor in Kansas City called and they said it is usually gas in the stomach that accidently got caught in the stomach during surgery. They told me to get Mylanta gas plus relief and use it until it goes away, like daily. Yippeeeeee what a relief!!

gosh, I do hope that is what is wrong with me. I thought it was strange that you could still have gas inside your stomach from them putting it into your cavity for surgery. Why wouldn't the gas leave when all the other gas did? Well, I am going to try any way.

Annabella I hope you get better!

Joi, I hope it works for you too. I know my pain isn't gas. Not sure what it is. I still have the left side pain. Its pretty much a constant these days. I will be glad when the cat scan is done. I do hope nothing is wrong and whatever it is thats going on just heals itself and goes away. Most people with the side pain seem to say it does go away?

She said the left side pain does go away with the Mylanta plus gas. There is an air bubble in the stomach and I guess it can't get out. So the Mylanta is suppose to take care of it. That is just what the doctor's office said. She also said it can be very presistant and miserable. So I tried it and it helped.

I was banded September 07 and a few months ago I started having pain on my left side as well. The pain is in my rib cage area. It can best be described as a cramp that you might have when running or exercising, but it doesn't go away for hours. My doctor says it's most likely the tubing that attaches the port to the band. On my xray, you can see the tube right in this area. I was told the pain likely comes from the tubing pressing up against the diaphragm which explains the cramp like feeling that worsens/sharpens with deep breaths. I'm scheduled for a laparoscopy next week in which he will move the tubing. Hopefully this works for relief! I hope everyone else having the infamous "left sided pain" has relief as well!:)<-----this is the "hopeful" face!

My pain is too far over and below the rib cage. So it is not right under the rib cage. Good luck glad you found out!

Jewlzmarie, My pain too gets worse with deep breaths, reaching up or stretching, getting up fast etc...

I saw my gastro dr today thinking it could be gastro. I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) brought on by the removal of my gallbladder. I have had IBS for 6 yrs now and have learned to control it and live with it. I found out today through a new dr (my old one moved away to AZ) that I also had a moderate case of Diverticulosis. I was NEVER told I had this disease. Iam upset to say the least. My symptoms seem to fit Diverticulosis when its advanced. He said back 6 yrs ago when I was 31 that I had a colon that looked like someone typical of 60-80 yrs old. The only thing you can do for this is to pack in the Fiber to help control it. This is very disheartening b/c my sisters friend just got her husband home from the hospital due to Diverticulosis. One of his pockets burst and he got so sick he was on a ventalator, lost 85% of his colon, has a colostomy bag, and is very ill. My disease seems to fit the symptoms Iam having but do we all have this disease and we just don't know it? Its said that everyone will have some form of this by the time they reach their 80's. One usually doesn't know they have it until a colonoscopy is done usually for some other reason as in my case. I had rectal bleeding in 2002 and found out I had polyps. They were removed but it was noted then I had this other disease which unfortunately I was never made aware of. Maybe my pain is all due to this? I have a catscan tomorrow and a colonoscopy on Sept 2nd.

It makes sense of the disease I have, but it doesn't make sense b/c so many of us have it and we are all banded and now having it?? All I can do is wait and see what the results of each test show. As of right now its still 50/50 that MY left side pain is my band or gastro related. I simply don't know.

There has to be more to this than an "gas pocket" if you are just now getting the pain. Let do some research on the internet and see if we can find something out and then post it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
