Help! Need a Kick in the Butt

Recommended Posts

Hi, :tt1: I had my first visit, like seminar on 4/30. Recieved a packet to fill out and send back. When they get my packet and info from my PCP, they will schedule consult with Doc. I have Highmark Blueshield PPO. So to get approved I need physician supervised diet for 6 months, Psych consult, & Nutrition consult. I'm 5.7 and weigh 285 or so. I have a BMI of 43/44. So here it sit, on my fat ass, :Dancing_wub: pondering whether or not I should go through with this. I filled out the questionere but now I need to fill out a 3 day food journal. That is my hang up!! I don't know if I should be truthful and write down all the junk I eat. Last year I did WW and lost 30 lbs. :hurray: but gained almost all that back :Dancing_wub: and just can't get my eating under contol since. Why do they want food log? Should I lie or tell the truth. The reason I'm waiting to fill out the form is waiting for a day I eat healthy. I don't know If I can do this! I like to eat. If I get banded I'm afriad I'll just live on ice cream I don't know what to do. HELP?

I would definetly tell the truth on your food logs. If your doctors are like mine, they will do everything they can to help you. All that they want is for you to try your best. Becasue my BMI was so high, I got to skip the 6 month diet. I had my surgery a few days ago, and am already feeling better aside from some sholdure pain. If you are struggling to lose some weight, increase the amount of Water you drink. My Aunt has been doing that for the past month and a half and has already lost 30 pounds.

I agree that you should tell the truth. If you ate healthy all the time then you wouldn't have weight to lose weight. They are there to help you.

Tell the truth. You are asking for a procedure that you legitimately need. You have nothing to hide - just go for it and don't talk yourself out of it. :tt1:

Please don’t take this wrong, but why are you considering lying in the first place? You want to have the surgery because you want to lose weight. You are hoping to get Portion Control by getting the lap band. I’m just wondering if you don’t want the medical staff to know about your eating habits. And believe me, I understand. I have lied about my weight--well, I did years ago, because I was ashamed. I really don’t think they’ll judge you because of what you eat; in fact, one of the goals might be to help change habits you have-- that’s what I’m hoping for, too. Definitely, tell the truth, and good luck!

Tell the truth. Write down every little thing you put in your mouth. Then, once you send in the journal, continue keeping one on your own and start trying to change your eating habits. Even if you have setbacks on ocasion, write everything down. Be able to show that you are committed to making the changes necessary to be successful to the band. Prove to the doctor and yourself that you can do this if you set your mind to it.

Good luck!!

Its time to face the truth about your health and well being. The Nutrionist will work with you to improve your eating habits. I would be honest. You didn't get this way overnight. Good luck.

Hello folks,

I am a 57 year old married man and am 5'5" tall and weight 250lbs. May 27th, 2008 I will go to my first support group meeting and also see my doctor for the first time (Dr. Eagon from Washington University).

Getting banded scares me because the diet afterwards seems to be extremely unappetizing. However, I can't imagine being this fat for the rest of my life either.

Can you give me some encouragement? Losing 100lb. would do me a great deal of good. Help!

Hi Warrior55. 100 lbs is very doable with the lapband. As far as the diet goes, you can eat everything just less of it. Good luck in your journey.

I also have a BCBS plan and had to follow the same path you did. If you are truthful and put down everything that you eat, you will have no problems. Trust me.. my info was sent in to BCBS and I was approved in one week!!! I didn't get this body eating salads and I didn't put salads down... Just do what they say and you won't have any problems..

My thoughts on the food diary are this: If you put down that you eat small portions and only healthy foods, the surgeon is going to tell you that you are already doing what you need to do, and the surgery will not help you. Either that, or the surgeon will realize that you are fibbing, and refuse to perform the surgery since you are not being honest with him/her or yourself.

I'd just tell the truth, and realize that this is a tool to help you change those habits. Of course you aren't eating the right things. None of us gained weight by eating only small portions and healthy foods. We're having the surgery because we want to develop those skills and habits.

This is what the food diary that my surgeon's gave me said:

"Please be as honest as you possible can be. Our goal is to understand where you get your calories and what eating behaviors are important to you. In this way we hope to know which operation is likely to work best for you. We also hope to be able to recommend changes in your behavior, or education about your diet that will make the operation more successful.

You will not be denied an operation based on poor eating habits, so there is no benefit to you to be anything less than completely honest as you fill out your food diary."

I was really tempted to use 3 good days and be as good as possible during them when I first got my food diary, but reading this made me change my mind.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
