ur What Tests Did You Need Pre-Op?

Recommended Posts

I am self-pay. I used my labwork that was done by my OB/GYN during my annual physical (blood count and electrolyte panel). I then had to have an EKG done which was already done by my cardiologist within the last week or two. Thats it!!

I was turned down by Cigna, I had all the pre-op tests last year. My medical insurance is changing to Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Sheild soon, if they will pay for the band, will I have to have all new tests?

If you have the same surgeon, I would call him with your question. My opinion is that since the tests were last year, you would have to have them done again.

I had seminar, 6 month diet, letter from doc, psych eval, nutritionist, pulmonologist consult, endoscopy, chest x ray, gallbladder ultrasound, doppler of legs (I had a pulm. embolism last year), and a bunch of blood work

It's amazing some of the preop work some of us need to get. I almost wonder if some of the other docs are in cahoots with the lap band surgeons to get their piece of the pie!:smile2:

Wow, I had to do the Blood work, and pee in a cup. I go to consult on memorial day, maybe the surgeon will require more stuff. I had to have a psych eval, didn't need nutrition thing.

OK, so tell me why we need an upper GI? I had one last year and it was not pleasent!!!! Will I need another one?

They do this to make sure that you do not have any issues with your esophagus, stomach, and small intestine that would make you a poor candidate for the surgery. I have a slight hiatal hernia but the technician said that it wasn't bad enough to disqualify me for the surgery and that the surgeon might just push it down while he's in there. You are right though, it is not a pleasant test, the stuff they have you swallow is awful! :tongue2:

I had to have:

Barium Swallow (upper GI)

Then Psych Eval

Then Medical clearance from my doctor: CBC, Lipid prfile, TSH, EKG, PT/PTT, CMP with medical clearance letter (doing this today!)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
