ur What Tests Did You Need Pre-Op?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

What tests did you need pre-op? I had bloodwork done, a chest x-ray, stool sample and other blood work where they took blood from an artery.

I also have to see the nutritionist and a psych before I have my appointment pre-op with my surgeon.

I have to go on a five day liquid diet prior to surgery.

What were your pre-op requirements?

Kat

I had bloodwork/ chest xray

I need to do a psych evaluation, endoscopy, and EKG

2 weeks before surgery I'll be doing a diet with 2 Protein shakes a day (one Breakfast, one lunch) and a sensible dinner

And for the insurance I'm doing a 6 month diet

I had blood work, ECHO, and upper GI. Also had to see the psych and take the nutrition/fitness class and test on that information. For my own peace of mind, I also had my yearly ob/gyn physical and she ordered a mammogram. Now I am just waiting on a date!

I forgot that I had an EKG also. I have been dieting since I had my first consult and have lost 9 lbs, at the seminar, the nurse said that we would have to lose 5% of our body weight but the same nurse did not mention that to me when I went in for my consult.

She also mentioned a class that I would have to take and an exam yet on the day of the consult, she said nothing, it's not on my list of things to do.

My surgeon is away until Wednesday, I am going to call the office and update them on what I have already done and see if I have any other tests to take, I also want to ask them if they can move my appointment up since there's a two month time span from when I should have everything done and my date with my surgeon.

I also forgot to mention that I have to attend at least two support groups, the third Tuesday of each month is when they are held so I'll be going to my first one on May 20th. The nurse said there will be no support meeting in July and if I make one, that is fine.

I met with the surgeon.

I then had to get letters from my pcp and my hematologist (I have a blood clotting disorder).

I went to a seminar.

I then had my psych eval and a barium swallow. I had an EKG and bloodwork done. I had recently had a CT scan and liver biopsy so i did not have to have the chest xray. I also had an EGD back in Oct.

For Dr. Stephen Clark at St. Francis Hospital in Indy/Beech Grove, I had to have the following tests:

7 vials drawn for blood work

Upper GI series, which involved a Barium swallow

Chest X-rays

EKG

Because the chest X-ray showed a "shadow", I was the sent for a pulmonary CT scan, which came up normal.

Since I was due to get blood work done for my gastroenterologist, I asked them to send him a copy of my blood work, and saved myself a poke. He also wanted me to have a TB test (due to some meds I take for the crohn's), but he said that the clear chest x-ray was adequate to show that I don't have TB. (I have to get tested every few years as a precaution, even if there are no signs of TB.)

I had a small bowel follow-through last fall, so I also had the Imaging Center send Dr. Clark those results. I figured it couldn't hurt for him to have the info.

I was turned down by Cigna, I had all the pre-op tests last year. My medical insurance is changing to Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Sheild soon, if they will pay for the band, will I have to have all new tests?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
