On day 11 - It's been a rough Ride

Recommended Posts

Hi All -

I had my surgery 11 days ago. In the beginning I was surprised by the pain and it was hard to get in all 64 ounces of the luiquids. I was doing all right and on day 5 I came down with a fever. It turns out I had a serious case of strep throat which was most unpleasant. It was really rough b/c I didn't feel great from the surgery and having that on top of it made me misearable. Now that, that is under control I am doing much better. I think the swelling must have gone down in my stomach because I now feel hungry. I see the doctor on Tuesday and I will move to the mushy stage, but today I did a bad thing and I couldn't help it. I took a bite of my son's grill cheese sandwich. I chewed it to almost nothing and it seemed to go down so easy. I am not sure what I expected, but I think I thought I would feel full from one bite. So I took another and then walked away. I had a creamy Soup for dinner and the 2 bites on top of it. I feel full now, but I am worried I am going to be able to eat anything I want without any restriction. I know I have to save away from the bad stuff and go healthy (low calorie and low fat), but it is so hard when there are temptations around us all the time.

How bad was I taking those 2 bites? Please give me your opinion. I need some support right now. Thanks

Hi, I am not even banded yet so I cant help you with advice in that area but it seems to me that two bites arent going to kill you as long as it doesnt trigger the urge to eat more when you shouldnt. Its almost like an addict taking only one hit--sometimes it leads to much more! Anyway, from what I understand is that you may be feeling pretty hungry till you get your first fill so hang in there!! I am sure once you are feeling better physically you will be able to handle everything just fine.

I think the problem with eating solid foods too soon has to do with the movement the stomach makes to digest food (churning). It could rip out the stitches. I think the idea is to let the stitches heal before putting any force on them. I think liquids would pass through with out the digesting movement.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
