Is this normal???

Recommended Posts

I was just banded on April 1 and I can eat everything and anything without any problems (if I take small bites and chew very thoroughly). I've had soft pieces of chicken and rice, actually anything that my family eats!

I've already lost more than 20 pounds and it hasn't even been two weeks! I'm starting to think something is terribly wrong.

Oh, and I don't know how to post pictures! My nose and chin are coming along just fine and I have lots of pictures, but don't know how to post them.

My computer was down for a few days, sorry for the late response!

Hey Isa, First off, what is normal? ;)

I don't know if it is normal or usual, but I lost about the same ammount of weight in the same ammount of time. Most of mine was Water weight, but yippi! that means no more edema, especially no more edema in my lungs.

I'm not sure your diet is normal, but if that is what your dr recommended, then that is normal for your Dr.

We are looking forward to those pix!

Isa,

Did your doctor give you a post surgery food schedule? I was on Clear Liquids 1 week, full liquids week 2, mushies week 3, slightly less mushie week 4 etc. Didn't get full solid foods till week 5 or so. Most people had very similar requirements to mine so I would have to say it is unusual for you to be eating normal foods now. Its possible that you physically can eat them because you may not have swelled as much as normal and you are still prefill but if your not supposed to be eating solid foods yet, you shouldn't push it. Your just supposed to focus on healing now. Best wishes, Teresa

well Not sure. I can pretty much eat anything too...as long as its small enough, and I can chew it in itty bitty pieces that is..lol

I think really its possible to eat anything if you chew it enough.

Ah the anxieties. Yes its normal but arent you suppose to be taking it easy for a few weeks? This is a very crucial point in the first stages so be careful.

Trust me when you are healed and they put the saline thru! You will not be woofing down food but planning to get what you need by what you can eat.

Kiss the lbs good bye. You will have a new diet wait and see. You wont have a choice and guess what. You paid for it! So use it and enjoy it....

Isa,

I am beginning to see that everyone is different. I was banded on March 30 and I have very tight restriction. I am still on the liquid diet stage and this Friday I will start on the mushy stage. Right now I can only get one cup of Soup down for my dinner, during the day I have a Protein shake for Breakfast and the rest of the time I fill up on non-cal liquids. I cant wait though to try me some egg and tuna salad. Hope everything works out for you.

Isa,

It is not uncommon for people to lose 20 or more lbs in under 2 weeks. You've drastically decreased your caloric intake from presurgery so it is normal to have lost that much weight. If you remain on liquids, then mushies you could probably lose more than you would ever imagine. Many doctors say no solids for the first 6 weeks and that is so your stomach can heal. Maybe you should stick to yogurt, Soups and the like to avoid any complications. You'd be amazed how much weight you might lose. I would say that nothing is wrong - you just got yourself a band.

Good luck

Hi Isa,

I had my surgery on Feb 11th, and did exactly what you are doing. I thought that because I could tolerate and digest the food, then it must be alright. What I didn't realise , and my Dr. didn't tell me, is that the band is stitched in place. This is one of the reasons you eat soft food, to not irritate the stitches. I don't think I did any damage, but my first fill hasn't had a huge effect.

Take it easy,

Rachel.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
