Had my 2week post op check up...I'm confused..

Recommended Posts

So everything is looking good he said, started me on mushie food, basically anything I can puree in my mouth is OK, Just nothing raw yet.

Here's some things he said that I'm confused about, I also had my 10mo. old with me, so I felt preoccupied....

1. He said he wanted me to wean out the Protein Drink the next couple of weeks???? Is it b/c extra calories? With a cup of milk, it's only 200cal. OR I know the band isn't designed to constantly have liquids, and he wants me to start getting my Protein from solid food?

2. I told him that i get pretty full fast, about 3/4c. But I get hungry after about 2-3hrs. He said i need to eat more protein in my meals. So I asked him, will I get my fill next time? He just said if you need it we'll give you some, if not, we won't. HELLO? I need to feel full longer!!! So I think I'll request a fill next time.

3. He said to add unflavored Protein powder to my food, is that different than drinking a Protein shake? It'll still fill me up more?

4. I feel so lost, I didn't get 270lbs. by eating small portions and healthy food. Right now, I feel like crying b/c I don't know how to eat healthy! I mean I feel like I look in my cabinets and know what I would fix preband, but now, I feel stuck. I know there's more healthy foods out there and recipes, but where do I start? I feel so overwhelmed...

Hey Katie---I'm Connie and I'm 5 weeks post op. I had my first fill last Tuesday 4cc, that brings me up to 5cc.I am was on liquids for 2 days and now I can go to mushy again. Taking my time to gradually work up to solid again. But seems like I am scared of solids ...........I too have a hard time with Protein, I tolerate the shakes but I have also heard to begin getting protein from solids, tuna, fish , meat etc but I am so afraid ........I guess Im afraid I wont chew foods enough or something. Its also hard for me because I have 5 kids who eat and eat and I have to prepare them their Normal dinners. But I am doing good so far. My starting weight was 290 and my goal is 188----I lost 30 pounds the first 4 weeks.....So I am pleased with that. Good Luck.........

If you can afford it, you'd probably get a lot out of having a weekly visit with a dietican for awhile. If you are feeling overwhelmed, she'd be able to walk you through some "daily menus" and help you figure out how to eat a balanced diet within a target calorie range.

There's a thread here on the board in the food & Nutrition section where people post what they are eating that might give you some great ideas on a daily menu, too.

Like Jack said, it's very important to eat solid Proteins once you are healed up, because they make you full for longer. That's probably why the doc wants to wait before seeing if you need a fill. You might find once you're on solid foods that you do stay full for 3-4 hrs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
