Feels like im failing

Recommended Posts

Hi fellow lap banders

I had my band put in 10 months ago.

In the first 5 months I lost almost half my weight which was 12kg. I am on the lighter side of lap bander.

Lately I have rediscovered the treats and gotten lazy and regained almost half of what i lost.

I feel like I am failing and I dont know how to get myself out. I am scared to go get readjusted as I dont want to discover exactly how much I have put on and have the doctors tell me to exercise and eat right because I tell myself that every morning and its not working.

I feel terrible as I am only 19 and my parents paid for me to have this operation and I am wasting there money and the more depressed I get about it the more I eat.

Has anyone experienced this or got through this feeling maybe you can give me some helpful tips.

Thanks

Chubby Chloe!

Hi Chloe,

As many people on this site will tell you, the band is only a tool to use to help you. Have you had a fill lately? Your tool won't work unless it's at a proper fill level.

Are you serious about loosing weight? Then face your temporary weight gain/set back up front, see your doctor and dietitian, and get back on track. Avoiding knowing how much you gain just lets you rationalize that it's OK. Only you can make the choice to change the path you're on. Get rid of the unhealthy treats in your house. Start a new exercise plan. Get into a new routine. Do it for yourself, not your parents and/or the money.

It SOUNDS easy, but we all know it's not. All of us who've been banded know how hard weight loss is. Unfortunately, it is what it is, and we have to do this for ourselves! For me, every day is a battle against food. Some days it's a big battle, otherdays not so hard. If you aren't hungry, it's easier to win the battle--so make sure your band is helping you as much as it can.

Take care! You are young and have your whole life ahead of you...enjoy it!

The best thing you can do for yourself is to visit your surgeons office. They deal with people like us all of the time and they are well equipped to help you throgh this ruff patch. If you could have done this alone you would have. Don't torture yourself by getting deeper into a rut go get help.

I have been where you are Chloe. I was banded a year ago, lost 18 kg and then stopped. I learned how to eat around the band. It was a very stressful time in my life and I was not ready to give up food as my "comfort". This lasted 7 months! I gained back 7 kg (without the band I would have gained it all back and more). I finally realized that no band, no gastric bypass, no surgery, no magic potion would work unless I really got into why I used food in the first place. For fodd addicts like myself, "willpower" or "abstinence" will only go so far - after that I will and have failed every time. In March I started therapy and with the encouragement of my therapist, I called my clinic and got a fill. Sure, it was not easy to face them and see the scale because denial is what I have been doing my whole life! But, I did, I am back on track, have lost 6 kg and feel so much better about myself. Chloe, I am taking little tiny baby steps back because that is what I can handle right now. I am not following any formal food or exercise program except to follow the bandster rules for eating. The exercise will come when I am ready - I choose not to overwhelm myself.

Now I understand that the band is only a tool - even though I have heard that many, many times and I will use it as such. It is my head and heart that have to change, my body will follow.

Look deep and hear all this advice and decide what is best for YOU, dear. Good luck and keep us posted. We care.

I went through something similar. It was hard to face the doc after gaining 20 lbs.

One thing that helped me do it was to up front, as we were weighing in, explain that I was embarrassed about my gain but knew exactly what I was doing wrong (eating junk!) and that I hoped she would help me get back on track.

She was very nice about it, although not particularly sympathetic. Gave me a fill, told me to aim for 1000-1200 calories a day and monitor my intake, reviewed the "bandster rules" with me and suggested I work through "The Beck Diet Solution".

All of which helped tremendously -- I've lost that 20 lbs + 6 more in the last couple months and am still on the losing track.

So chin up, and make that appt. You'll feel a lot better afterwards, knowing you did what you needed to and it's over (facing the doc that is).

Go get adjusted! That is what this is for. Don't wait untill you have gained all of your weight back. Even if your Doc gives you a hard time for gaining the adjustment and the weight loss is worth a few minutes of hearing your MD gripe! Go for it. You can do it we all believe in you!!!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
