Check with your Dr. first but after my banding I only had to be on clear liquid the day of and the day after. For the next two weeks I was able to eat full liquids. (yogurt, cream soups-strained, pudding, applesauce). See if this is OK with your dr and you should feel more satisfied.

Hi Slim2be,

I was banded May 5th also. I was on a liquid diet for two weeks before my surgery so by the time I had my surgery I thought it would be a breeze to be on thin liquids, not so. Can't wait to get to mushy food. My dr. does let me have Protein Shakes thinned, Tomato Soup diluted, but you do need to ask your Dr. to clarify what he means by clear.

Curious

Thank you everyone for the quick responses. I think I will call my doctor tomorrow. It is so hard especially with me having kids and my husband that are eating all these good regular foods every day. I have a follow up on tuesday but that is 5 more days from today i would love to start my apple sauce skim milk and Protein Shakes

I haven't taken any pain meds at all since I have been home. I have a great tolerance for pain. the gas was horrible, I do walk alot and purchased some gas x strips yesterday. i keep a heating pad on my back and belly which seems to help me. I was having a lot of doubts the first 2 days I was home, thinking to my self WHAT HAVE I DONE can't eat anything I LIKE ANYMORE. WHAT IF I DON'T LOSE WEIGHT. but today i weighed my self I am down 10 pounds which I am sure is Water but it looks good to me. I feel much better today. It is very hard being on the Clear Liquids but I am doing well not cheating at all.. How is your recovery going?

slim,

Don't get discouraged! You might not be able to eat "anything you like" right now, but that will change. This is an important time for you to stick to your doctors orders, let everything heal up. I know its hard right now, but it won't last long. Don't be discouraged if you put some weight back on when you start mushies (some do, some don't). Try not to look at your weight loss as "I only lost a pound this week", try and look at your average!

I was banded May 6th. My doctor told me to drink three Protein Shakes a day as long as they are mixed with Water and not milk. Believe me they really fill you up. I think you may need some more Protein than you are getting. You may want to call your doctor.

bordryu. I had my surgery on 4/28 and since about day 3, I could drink just like before the surgery. Is that normal?

I dunno, because of all the gas pains I don't know if taking bigger drinks is a problem or not.

On my discharge notes it says to sip day 1 but doesn't give much instructions 2-5. So I'm a little lost.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
