It was a no-go

I went to get my lap band inserted. When I woke up, I was informed that they didn't actually insert the band. They said that the hernia I had was too big... They repaired my hernia and closed me up. I am so dissapointed. Apparently a large hernia puts me at risk at band slipage. The doctor recomended that I get gastric bypass in stead. I made an appointment to talk with the doctor to discuss my options.

Any thoughts on this? :confused2:

WOW! So Sorry that happen. What a disappointment. I have a hernia also. I'm still in the pre-approval stage. The doctor at the infromational meeting told me they could fix the hernia and still do the lap-band. I'm looking to have mine done in Moline, IL. where are you from? Good luck.

My doctor also told me that my hernia wasn't that bad and that it shouldn't be a problem when they put the lap band in... but, they were wrong. I had mine done in SLC Utah.

Maybe you should get a second opinion. I think I would.

HI Chappy,

Keep the faith....I too think about the possiblity of this happening to me...my doctor has already voiced concern because of a bad case of scar tissue that I have from previous procedures.....so this scenario could very well play out in my case also....and I have also considered what my other options might be.......

I absolutely concur; a second opinion is a good idea.

I would get the surgical notes and go for a second opinion as well. Specially if the hernia repair may put you in a better position for the future.

I had a hernia repair done during lapband surgery. Everything seemed to go well but I had a lot of shoulder pain weeks after surgery. I was scared to death that for some reason the surgery wouldnt go through because of the hernia . . . but I am sure grateful that it did. I am very sorry that you had to wake from surgery to learn that it didnt happen. I can only imagine how that must have felt.

Every doctor seems a little different (just look at differences in post op diets and fill requirements). You may have a very conservative doctor. However, it is best that if you have a very high probability of slippage that other alternatives are discussed. Discussing it with other surgeons is definitely worthwhile at this stage.

Sorry to hear that. My band wasn't put in last March as well. Mine wasn't do to hernia though. They told me I had to lose more weight, but I'm still in the running for a band.

The bypass isn't a bad choice especially if they are concerned about slippage. The dieting and so forth is basically the same. There are some differences as you know and those differences are probably what made you choose the band. But in the end, you'll get the same results.

I dunno, my gut reaction is to get a second opinion. Also, I wonder if after healing from the hernia issue if it will even be an issue. Also, maybe you can see if they have the other bands available? There's more than one on the market, so maybe one of those would be better suited to you?

It's hard though to go in for the band and not come out with it. I totally, totally know how you feel. *gentle smile*

Oh no! I've not heard of that before. I'm going to the same surgeons. How did they know you had the hernia? Did you have endoscopy first? What was your bmi? Were you self pay? Sorry for all the questions. I hope you're not having to pay a bunch of money for nothing.

What kind of hernia did you have? Is it ventral (incision from prior surgery) or hiatal?

Look at this as just a step on the journey for becoming healthier!

That was my biggest fear! Thankfully it was either repaired or I didn't have one. I don't remember talking to the doctor after my surgery. They say I did, but the drugs I was given were just that good . My mom didn't think to ask if I had one or not, so it is on the 2 week follow-up appointment list.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
