its soo hard to give up soda...i love it...but ive heard that you can lose so much weight from giving that up alone...how bad is diet soda for you..this may have been mentioned, but i am curious

Have you been banded yet? I was so addicted to Diet Coke it was ridiculous. (Just like a lot of people on this thread.) I thought there was no way I could give it up. BUT, being motivated to have my band work was enough to have me leave it behind. I don't really miss it, either. I'm shocked at how easy it is to live without it.

Drinking carbonated beverages can expand the pouch created by the band and ruin it's effectiveness. It also can cause the band to slip. (Everyone, please correct me if I'm wrong on these facts.) Besides for that, I hear it hurts like heck to drink them once you are banded!

My doc said no soda, because the carbonation expands in the pouch. I gave it up completely.

However, once in a while, I have a carbonated Mike's Hard Lemonade (light of course, only 90 cals per bottle). What I do is pour it from a bottle into a glass, then pour it out into another glass and keep doing that back and forth until it loses some of the bubbles. Then I put it back in the bottle and drink it - 'cause it makes me feel more normal that way - or something.

I was a diet coke addict also, and I can proudly say that I have not bought nor drank a diet coke since my banding. I will admit though, that occasionally I will take a sip of my husbands. The only soda I've had is my 7&7's occaisonally when we go out and have a few drinks. Usually from a bar they are flat anyway, especially when the soda is poured over ice, and if you stir it you can get most of the bubbles out. I know I couldn't sit there and have a beer, so I'll drink whiskey instead!! My husband hates it because now I'm an expensive date. :wink2:

I think carbonation is only one part of the equation... The fake sugars in diet soda are a whole other animal that contribute to weight gain and slow weight loss... Those fake chemicals are just bad news... and I am not sold on that 'Truvia' crap either...

Here is how I have dealt with it, after being addicted to Diet Coke and then quitting cold turkey. I enjoy a glass of cranberry juice with a small ounce or two of 7-Up/Sprite mixed in it. It allows me to drink socially with friends before dinner or during a night out and gives me that occasional fizz craving I need to satisfy without having the pain and problems of a whole can of soda. Maybe it could work for you.

You can put any carbonated beverage in the blender and it will take away the fizz immediately...........we did it all the time when I worked the pediatric ward and docs ordered flat coke.

I don't drink soda. I tryed to take a taste of Coke and I thought I was dying. I have been banded since 07/08 and it killed me. If I need the taste I will drink a coke icee, no carbonation.

Where can you find Coke Icee without carbonation? Al of the ones I have ever gotten are definitely carbonated...

Well I guess there is some carbonation, however when you buy it from the icee machine at gas stations or in Walmart the coke is flat so you don't have the bubbles. Also they have frezzer pops in Dr.Pepper, Root beer, 7 up and Orange Crush that work well. I buy these at Walgreens.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
