Why am I GAINING weight?

Recommended Posts

I was banded exactly 2 weeks ago. I wrote a thread about how happy I was to have lost over 7 kgs (15.4lbs) between Optifast and post surgery only last week. The past four days, I have gained back 1.5 kgs. I cannot for the life of my understand it..I have 3 x sustagen a day (protein drink recommended by the nutritionist - around 250 cals each) and one small serve of Soup at night. That's it. I have not had one single other thing. I'm not particularly hungry unless it's night where I start to look forward to the soup. All in all I feel it's working very well and I'm still thrilled I did it but how can I be gaining weight? I have done a little walking, nothing huge but still being active.

I'm trying not to get discouraged, can someone give me insight here?

TIA

C xx

Don't worry, tia! This is perfectly normal to gain a little back when you transition from your clears to your full liquids. I did, and so did countless others.

Definitely don't let this discourage you. You will be just fine.

Welcome to Bandster Hell!

This may not come out exactly right....

I have read on here somewhere before that when your food intake decreases substantially it can throw your body into "starvation mode". This causes your body to use it's own reserves to provide energy.

I am not sure if that could cause you to gain weight, but it might be worth looking into. A lot of folks on this site say they have to maintain in between a certain amount of calories to loose weight (say 800-1000 calories)...on the flip, I have read where if you take in too few calories, it can cause you to stall.

I would wager to bet that you will see a signifigant drop on the scales really soon. Your body is just reacting to the changes...

Check out the amount of sodium in your Soup. What I understand is you will be more susceptible to Water weight gain in the month following surgery while you are healing than normal. Also of course there are those monthly fluctuations too. It will come back off.....probably a big drop quickly.

I wouldn't worry at all. If you follow the rules, you will lose. Your body needs time to adjust after an enormous shock to your system. Also, if you are anywhere near your time of month you may see the same upward weight change for a few days like clockwork every month.

Everyone loses a little differently. For me, I lose a couple and stall a while, lose a couple and stall a little longer. All I needed to do was give myself adjustment time and not feel heartbroken if I did not see the scale decline every day.

Just wait until you start comparing on a monthly basis . . . then you will really see what following the rules and working the band can do for you :0)

as i am sure you wee told everyone is different. I lot about a pound a day on liquid diet, then gained 4 pounds on the soft food. then i stalled. now i am loosing the weight again. it is not melting off as i dreamed it would, but it is moving, and i am happy. I work out and i eat pretty healthy. i have lost 45 lbs. and i have gone from a tight 22 pant to a 16/18 w just today. I got my band in feb. I have had two fills (the first one was not even noticeable in the fullness factor,) this last one (last week) was much better. Don't get discouraged, just give it time to work and then work the best you can with it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
