the "ker-plunk" feeling

Recommended Posts

does anyone else experience this?:

When I am eating a meal, if the food is more solid like meats, some veggies, etc, I will take a couple of small swallows. Then, often it will almost feel stuck. I will get up, walk, take deep breaths, etc. Suddenly, I will feel a ker-plunk, the food goes through, and i am fine. Is this normal? I thought the food was supposed to sit on TOP of the stoma and slowly digest. And, I don't drink Water with my food, so water isn't pushing it down. I wonder...could I need a fill? or, plainly, what the heck is going on in there?

I don't know what you call it . I get that sometimes too! Usually it's if I don't chew enough or it's something tough like meat. I'm sure someone here will know the technical term for it.I just had my 3rd fill april 17th and I don't know that that has anything to do with it. Kerplunking(you invented a new term I think! lol) has happened to me a several times since surgery regardless of my fill level. It happened to me tonight with turkey breast...too dry.

I have this happen quite frequently also. I sit and wait for that "kerplunk" to happen, i can literally feel it pass then i know i am free to continue with my meal.

Happens to me alot. I just have to slow down and take smaller bites.

It sure can cause discomfort in the middle of my chest.

Detemined to stay with solid foods since that 's what we are suppose to be eating at this point. I'm one month and a few days post op.

Feeling great otherwise. Happy that I'm not throwing up at all.

Yes, I think it's normal. I too get the kerplunk with dense solid foods. It's a very peculiar feeling, but it sure beats being stuck!! It seems to be more pronounced with meat, you're right, but I have had it with like baked butternut squash, rice and eggs. It definately keeps you from eating to fast.

It IS supposed to stay on top. This has happened to me as well. But, I have a different take on it. Because the food is supposed to stay on top, I immediately stop eating when this happens. If I have eaten so much that it is forcing the food through, then I have eaten too much. That is my cue to quit! :-)

I don't know if that's right or not, but it my somewhat logical way of looking at it.

I have had the kerplunk feeling, and it scares me. I'm afraid it means that the band is being pushed down (re:slip).

The food you eat will begin to move through the band immediately, the idea being that you should fill up faster than the top portion of your stomach empties. Whenever that feeling happens to me, I evaluate how much I've had... if it's only been a bite or two, then I need to consider the size of the bites I'm taking, or how fast I'm chewing... if I'm further into my meal, I start considering whether it's time to just stop altogether.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
