Protein substitutes

Recommended Posts

I'm not a big fan of Protein. I know I'm going to have to change that way of thinking, so my question is after the surgery, can I have vegetarian refried Beans with black beans added in. Since that's a can of each, it makes ALOT, but of course, I don't even eat all that NOW...but are beans an acceptable substitute for hard proteins....

They are... But you're gonna wanna stay away from Beans for the first few months I am sure... You're gonna already have tons of gas.

Refried Beans are a good choice during the mushie stage....and good to mix in with cooked meats later on to help them go down a little easier sometimes. They have quite a few carbs but they are good carbs so they work for us.

When you say you are not a fan of Protein, are you referring to Protein supplements such as the powders and the canned drinks? You really need to do some experimenting and find some you like....most of them, esp. the powders, are just a good base to work from - adding ice, berries and extracts and SF syrups can make a world of difference in them....get a little blender (a small one like a Hamilton Beach Personal Blender...about $15) and get creative. Not only do they give you the Proteins you need, but they can take the place of a sweet treat like ice cream. (go to www.davincigourmet.com and look over their recipe suggestions). My favorite is coffee (decaf) with chocolate protein powders and various SF syrups....both hot and as a shake. No more than our little pouches can hold, it is imperative that we use supplements to get our quota, especially for the first several months.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
