Help!!! How to obtain 5 year history of obesity

Recommended Posts

Please Help!! My insurance Co (bcbs of TX) requiers a 5 year history of obesity...I don't have that!! I didn't go to the doctor as much as as I should have over the past five years. I haven't even seen the surgoen yet but I am trying to get everything ready now so I don't have to stall the operation when the time comes and I feel I've hit a wall with this one. I have had my primary doctor for about a year but there is a 3 year gap where I don't have medical records. I'm 24, can I use my childhood records if they are attainable? Ugh, I can't believe this minor issue could hold me back!! Is it possible to show pictures as proof?? Please Help me.....Advice anyone:confused2:

Well, my insurance requires it too... but due to my size, I'm pretty sure I was an auto approval.

I submitted to my doctor all the medical records I could get ahold of, but I have gone to the dr at least once a year for some issue.

How long ago are your childhood records? You've not been to the ER, or Urgent Care places- weight watchers??

I have BCBS of NC (and I'm 24 also), take a deep breath. If you can provide 5 years of medical history, they don't have to be consecutive years, this will be fine and plenty. I provided records from 1998 when I was still very much a minor and scattered them through... definitely not 5 consecutive years, but as such, that was plenty to get approved. They are LOOKING for AT LEAST 5 years of morbid obesity.

I haven't gone to the ER or anything like that and all the diets I've tried through the Dr's have been within the last year and a half. I'll get as many records as I can and keep my fingers crossed.....

Thank you NicoleW8ing!!! I've been calling my Pediactric Doctor's office but they are out to lunch LoL!! Soooo hopefully they still have my records. You would think that the ins. Co's could access some website that pulls up all your medical history....I mean aren't doctors able to obttain them??

Thank you. I am excited

No, the Doctor's can't obtain them themselves because of HIPAA. I have TONS of family members that work in the medical industry and HIPAA is a blessing and a curse. It makes communication a LOT harder. You will have to sign a medical release form to get your pediatrician to send the records to your surgeon. Pain in the butt.

Not sure if "Coley" is female or male...but if it's the first than your annual gynecologist's weigh-in might be enough.

Ha! This is ridiculous. My brother calls me Coley  My name is Nicole too.

You'll need a fax number... check out efax.com or fax2mail.com or just get your RI doctor to fax the medical release form to your current doctor and you'll have to go in and fill it out.

I have BCBS of Michigan and I also had to come up with 5 years of history. But mine could be from weight loss programs also. Over the past 5 years I had tried Curves, WW, LA Weight lose and number of other ones!!! It made me cry after I wrote them all down:(

So, with that said you should see if you plan is the same or is it just records from your physician?

Good luck!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
