Advice needed

In brief, I've been banded greater than a year...having great results thus far. I just recently had an "aggressive" fill so that I would have good restriction. I'm loving it!!! I'm now getting "full" and not overeating.

My problem is that while I know I'm tighter than I've ever been, and I'm comfortable with it...I now have night time GERD...Now, I'm not sure if this is because my dinner hasn't had time to pass through my band...or if my allergies are just driving me crazy (which they have been doing for about 2 months now)...

It seems that I now wake throughout the night with a mouth full of...well you know...but it isn't always slimmy froth. Often, it is mucous, just as I've always experienced from having allergies and colds.

The difference is that it is happening during my sleep...and not allowing me to get full rest.

I don't think I'm too tight...and I don't want to get an un-fill (because I'm really digging my results!!!)

So, what do you think could be the problem? And also, how many hours do you let pass between your dinner and before going to sleep? ??

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm I really really want to say that it isn't caused by being too tight. But it may be. I was waking up choking on acid during the night and got an unfill and the problem was solved. But then again, I don't have allergies either so I guess that is possible. It would suck to have an unfill because of this seeing as you are getting great results though :frown:

I asked my surgeon how to tell if I was too tight and he listed reflux as one of the signs, especially at night.

I have had plenty of night time reflux before being banded. (It's gone completely now since banding.) I never experienced mucous involved with the reflux. Sometimes I'd wake up with bile burning my throat and mouth. The best remedy for that occurrence I've found is Alka-Seltzer Heartburn. I'm not sure if that's considered carbonation and whether or not it's compatible with the band, but it sure quenches that burning from reflux.

I have just recently started having the same problem with heartburn (last adjustment 7/07). The nurse recommended Mucinex for children if the heartburn was due to mucus and try Priolosec (cut up into pieces) if it is due to excess acid. According to her a lot of the patients she is seeing now are having this problem.

Thanks everyone for your comments...they really do help!

I might have failed to mention that the when I do have these coughing spells at night, there is productive mucous, as if I have an upper respiratory infection...And to be honest, I think I do have one. I'm a long term asthma, which I'm controlling, but it flairs at times, especially when the season/weather is changing...

The reason I don't want to get the unfill is because I love that I'm finally getting full when I sit down to a meal...and that I don't eat the WHOLE meal!!! Until this fill, I was able to eat a FULL MEAL with little to no problems...especially if I ate slowly!!!

Sooooooo.... the number on the scale is moving down (finally)....and I'm working out more (when I get hot from workouts, it helps to expel some of the mucous...and thats a good thing!)...Gym in the AM and Exotic dance in the PM...those are my new hobbies!!!

Once again...THANKS!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
