1st Day home - Story for upcoming banders

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the experience!!! I am a HUGE chicken, and that makes me feel better. I'm not scared of being naked or my boobs, just PAIN...lol what does that say about me? hehehe

Where is the fill port and is it visible?? Does it interfere with the band of your bra?

Melissa

5'8", 271lbs

goal: 130

I am not sure if the port is visible as I cannot remove my bandages until I meet with the Dr. on Thursday.

Now that's the kinda story I like !

My big worry is conscious intibation. I have sleep apnea and five years ago when I had an abdominal hysterectomy I had to have the breathing tube shoved down my throat while I was still awake. NOT a pleasant experience despite the banana flavored numbing agent...and yes, I remember everything including the feeling that I was choking to death.

My consult is on the 13th and if everything goes well surgery should be the middle of June.

....ooow...I need to go shake off that memory now ! :)

Yes Tammy - shake it off. All will go fine as it is an elective procedure, the Dr's have plenty of time to knock you out and wake you up without being rushed so you shouldnt be aware of any tubes.

My surgery was very similar, it was done on the 30th. I thought about the 'boobs' thing too! I told my pre-surgery nurse I was worried I would be made fun of while I was on the table (I tend to overthink things). Of course she said no!!

A funny thing about the boobs - I told my BF that right now I cant wear a bra b/c 2 of my incisions are under each boob. She said "they put the incisions that high up?" I said "no, my boobs are that LOW" :). So, just a couple days out and I am allready laughing.

Thats too funny!!!!

Thanks for the story!!! My surgery is coming up this month and I'm really excited but really nervous. Everyone in the May 2008 threads would love to hear this story since they might not be able to find it here!

I am not sure how to copy it to the May thread - any ideas?

I'm an ol'pro at surgery. As a kid I never had to go to the hospital with the usual ailments, broken bones or needing stitches.(not sure how, cause I was a real tomboy) But in 2000 I had a torn meniscus in my knee. I remember reading the list of how my surgery would go, and started to freak when I read about the tube being put down your throat. They can't even do the strep test without me almost throwing up. I even tell my dentist at the end of an exam when he checks my jaw and neck and looks around my mouth with his little mirror, to be careful or he'll get a first hand look at my lunch. Then 2 years later the other knee was done. I was less nervous, by then. And another year later, I had emergency gallbladder surgery. Now I know I'll never feel, or know about the tube and it feels like 5 minutes has gone by between them saying "take a deep breath" and "Susan, wake up, it's all done.". Also it's probably the best sleep out there besides being dead. HAHA:ohmy:

I also had my bandding on May 1st and today I feel really good. Five nights will give you more than enough time to get back on your feet.

The port is not visible. I haven't put a bra on yet but I don't anticipate any problem. I can not even feel the port.

I know how you feel. I keep telling my husband that this is going to be a whole new thing for me. I lost @10 lbs during my pre-op diet and thought I had it going on (hahaha). That has always been my downfall - loosing a few pounds - getting cocky and gaining all plus some. I am so glad I got banded.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
