I went to have my first fill yesterday at the hospital. My doctor usually does the first fill using the x-ray while you swallow that white chalky substance to see how much of a restriction you currently have. As he watched the Fluid go down to my pouch he said that I did not need a fill because the fluid was not flowing through the band quickly. That may have been true, but I still feel like I can comsume too many calories during the course of the day and I am still looking for food to eat. Should I have insisted on the fill? I would like to get your opinions. Thanks!

Yes, I have lost 22 lbs since my surgery on March 24. But most of that was lost in the first 2 weeks.

The doctor I'm having surgery with this week says he uses the "drinking Water method" (whatever that is, I don't know yet?) because when he used to use the x-ray method he had a tendency to underfill people because it *looks* like such a small area, that he thought it was almost too tight, even though it wasn't at all.

Does your doctor offer the "drinking water" method to test for doing a fill? If so, you may want to request that instead as a more accurate guage for how much of a fill you should really get.

I'm going to assume the "drinking Water method" is what I just had done this week, the doc puts a fill in, gives you some water to drink and if you throw up, he removes some of the fill, otherwise see you in a few weeks and off you go.

My doctor used the drinking Water method. He made me hold a small cup of water, start to fill the band and had me drink, when the band was filled to its max, the water would stuck and wouldn't go down, then he unfilled the band until the water went down. I was filled 2 ccs and that was a good fill for me, I have good restriction.

Wow - that is interesting; I hadn't had that done that way before. I might suggest that to my doctor.

He is very conserative - and gives in small increments each fill and he checks by the "dixie cup" method... LOL - I sip on some water and then I go. BUT because I tend to get over tighten, I think I might suggest this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
