No Alcohol HAIR PRODUCTS?

Recommended Posts

I was advised by the surgical nurse that I shouldn't use any type of hair products containing ALCOHOL 24 hours prior to surgery. She stated hair gel as well as hair spray.

I've had many surgical procedures and never once has this been an issue.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

Normally, this wouldn't be an issue, but I have a HUGE public event the afternoon prior to surgery.

My banding date is 5/5/08 also.

I did my pre-op admission meeting with the hospital staff yesterday and they said no hair products, no leave-in conditioner, gel, no deodorant, no nothing on my body.

The reason they said was that the petroleum and alcohol in a lot of those products were "spark" hazards. Not sure exactly what could "spark", but I guess since it's laproscopic, the electronics in the equipment that they use could be it.

Sort of like smoking a cigarette while you're pumping gas...

With all my surgeries, including another laproscopic procedure, I was instructed to have clean, DRY hair. No make up, at least one nail unpolished.....blah, blah, blah----but nothing about no alcohol hair products!!! How strange! Be cool to see if others have been told the same, or had bad experiences with it!

Hi,

The Nurse just called today from the hospital where I will be having LB surgery. The instructions she gave me was to take my thyroid meds at 6am in the morning with a little Water. bathe with bacterial soap (like Dial) Wash my hair, and put absolutely nothing on my hair-hairspray, no deodorant, perfume etc.

But, to tell you the truth I was so nervous that I may have gotten it wrong. I have had 3 calls from the hospital so far..my advice get a pencil and pad handy when it get nearer to your surgery date. Write down what she says, don't count on memory. That is if your the nervous type.

I was also told NO hair products at all. (Which, to be honest, isn't a problem since I am the ponytail QUEEN and RARELY use anything. lol)

I think if you go to your event, then come home and wash your hair you'll be fine. (But that is my unprofessional opinion.)

Thanks so much for all the comments!

The goofy thing about it all is, there was nothing mentioned about showering or lotion or deoderant...

Just no ALCOHOL hair products for 24 HOURS.

I mean, I'll be sure that my hair is clean -- but nothing for 24 hours??

And what really threw me was it came at the end of the sentence...

...No ALCOHOL to drink 24 hours prior to surgery -- and that includes hair products with Alcohol in them.

WTH??

I think I was simply stunned to silence. I couldn't wrap my brain around it.

At any rate -- the plan is, look fabulous for the event, come home and wash my hair.

End of story.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
