Dying for salt!

Recommended Posts

I am 9 days post op. Since being banded food is of 0 interest to me. I haven't had anything to chew even tho the doctor has released me to eat mushies and a few other food. Yesterday though I couldnt get salt out of my mind I rarely ever have salt on anything so that was weird for me. I was doing my shopping for the family at the grocery store and saw a red grapefruit and my mouth started watering..... very weird no hunger just a massive craving for it. I used to hate grapefruits wth is wrong with me lol. So I buy it run home cut it into small pieces cover it with salt and pick at it till the whole thing was gone.........

I have only had a couple shakes a day since surgery so I guess I wasnt getting enough salt? LOL now im back to normal today and lack complete interest in foods again and still have no hunger pains.

Anyone else do something very weird like this? I think my husband thought I had lost it. I wouldnt be suprised if he brought home a salt lick they use on farms or something from the way I was acting lol

I've been banded 5 months now. I thought for sure I would crave my beloved foods. Beer, ice cream, baked potatoes, vodka tonics, brownies, breads, mexican food...... Doesn't bother me in the least. Know what I crave? Salty, cruchy chips. Drives me right to insanity. It is now definatley my weak spot. Kettle chips? OMG.... cheese Nips? God help me. Tostitos with salsa? muy bueno!! I stuggle with this all the time. I thought maybe since I was drinking SO MUCH Water it was flushing out my electrolites. I could be wrong, I'm not sure.

Before banding I never had cravings. I was just an overeater when I ate... So I have to assume from what I felt my body was telling me it was lacking or something. But in the moment that I was eating that grapefruit nothing else existed lol

man it was good.

It's kind of nice to actually taste your food now isn't it? Instead of gobbling, I have learned to slow down and actually taste it. I ate a very ripe strawberry the other day and it was literally ecstasy.

Hi Aubrie, I read somewhere in one of these forums, recently, someone who sucked on cheese puffs for those cravings. I'm not banded, yet, and can't recommend it, but there it is- for emergencies?

I had this issue too.... my understanding, is it could be dehydration- even with drinking alot of water- flushing out our fat, and other junk, takes extra-- so.. you might try drinking EVEN MORE. Sounds funny?

I have no idea if it mean anything or not....but many years ago when I was pregnant with my oldest DD, I was doing my best to be "perfect". No caffeine, no salt, lotsa veggies.....you get the idea.

Well I did fine with no caffeine, and with not much sugar....but about 6 months into the pregnancy I could have killed for salt!!! I would have loved to dive head first into a bag of chips!!!

I caught myself savoring the dill pickle on a burger----not for the flavor of the pickle but the salty taste. Well I had a purpose--I was creating life, so I did not deviate from the plan. Ignored the salt.

When DD was born, all was well, when she was about 2 she began getting leg cramps. Then her entire back would knot up into tense muscle ropes--we had her to the Dr. and ER many times. I mean you know how a charlie horse hurts, and her entire legs and back would do this!

Lots of testing later, it was decided her body does not utilize the sodium it takes in. She actually has to increase her salt intake to avoid the problem, and takes medication for it! For awhile they thought it was a potassium defficiency, related to thyroid----but her body simply does not draw the necessary sodium from food and utilize it.

I have always wondered if it was related to my intese cravings for it while she was in utero, or if I was reacting to the malformation of whatever was going on.

Since then, I try to keep it in reason, but if I crave something of that nature, I try to appease it with a bit.

I am not suggesting you do like I wanted and dive into the bag of chips......but possibly a saltine cracker with some soup.....

Kat

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
