Return to work

Recommended Posts

What is the fastest time anyone has returned to work? I am a nurse, but I don't do any heavy lifting. My ultimate fantasy is to have the surgery like on a Thursday, take it and Friday off, then have my scheduled weekend off, and return on Monday. Do you think it can happen? I understand that there may be complications, but if not? Thanks

Have you ever had any surgery? Do you know if you are a fast healer or if you take a while to "bounce back" from things?

I had surgery on a Wednesday and was back at work on Monday, but I have a desk job. I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to handle standing all day at that point! As a rule I heal pretty quickly and bounce back from things fairly fast; the general anaesthesia was the worst part fot me. I didn't feel completely clearheaded until about Saturday night.

I am an Engineering Secretary and I am doing alot of walking all day. I had surgery on Friday, home Saturday and went to work on Tuesday, its a day less than you but I was fine. The only problem I had was the body aches afterwords felt like if I would have done tons of sit ups or something!

I had surgery on Thursday and was back to work on Tuesday...I gave great thought to Monday but thought it would be wise to give it that additional day.

I took off a week. I could have returned sooner. My biggest problem was the GAS!!! Once I got past that I was great!!!!

I'm a nurse, but not really doing heavy work on the units anymore. I had surgery on Monday and returned to work on Thursday...just took it slow and was very careful of the lifting restrictions.

I had my surgery on a Tuesday and took a 2 weeks off, but not because I did not feel good, I could of gone back to work the Friday after surgery. I chose to take the extra time off because I was on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks post op and I have a restaraunt and I was not sure how I was going to handle being around food mentally only being on just clear liquids. I chose to go back to work once I was on full liquids . Pain wise I felt great very soon after my surgery, I was up and shopping in TJ the day after my surgery.

Another nurse here, I returned to work at 11 days post-op and was a little sore. probably could have returned a few days earlier but wasn't going to risk having to lift/pull someone and hurt myself...

I too am a nurse .I work in a doctors office ,so no real lifting is required. I took off a week I worked 12 hrs on Tuesday, had Surgery on Wednesday and was back to work the following Thursday. I took it slow and no real lifting or stretching. My co-workers helped out when asked. take as much time off as you can. I do recommend at least a week,My doc's office says 2 weeks.

I am an O.P. surgery RN. I had my surgery on thursday and returned to work on the following tuesday. I do alot of pushing and pulling of carts, leaning over cart rails, and squatting to do IV starts.I was sore, and slow for a few days, then back to normal. I played the sympathy thing up for as long as I could at home though!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
