Fill Newbie - Some Questions!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone -

Had my first fill this morning and I have some questions if you so will indulge me!

First of all, I am beyond starving - I didn't anything before my fill this morning because I wasn't sure if I was supposed to. I know he put 4cc in a 10cc band - he put more in first, but then saw under the flouro that I was obstructed.

So - the liquids are completely not doing it for me and I don't have any sort of feeling of being tight. Am I only going to feel tight and full when I start eating real food again?

Also - how long did you remain on liquids and then purees after your (first) fill - Doc really didn't clarify:sad:

Thanks so much!!!

Miki I am in the same boat. I had my first fill and am very hungary also. I did eat before I went but only Soup and salad. I was already hungary 2 hours later when I walked in to get my fill. I also had 4cc put it but he said it was a 12 cc band. I saw the same thing on the flouro total restriction then he adjusted to slowed passing in comparison to the first swallow I did.

I am looking forward to advice also.

Sometimes (actually often) it takes more than one fill to find good restriction. I only have to be on liquids for 24 hours after a fill.

If you are hungry, it's better to eat small meals more often. After you are back on solids, you need to eat solid Protein, not mushy. Mushy will go right through the band and you will be hungry often. chicken is a good choice, but just make sure you wait in between bites, take small bites, and chew very very well.

My doctor's protocol for post-fill diet:

liquids only the first 24 hrs; soft, mushy stuff the next 24 hrs.

So really, 48 hrs. of watching the texture of what you eat.

Then it's back to whatever you can tolerate OK.

I am amazed that I had my first fill 3.6cc and couldn't swallow so the Dr. took out 1cc but yet others get as much as 4cc and can handle it. I am also feeling very hungry. I was hoping for restriction. At times I question whether or not this band will work for me. I try so hard but when I am hungry I break down and eat something. I feel like I am eating too much.

You have not been banded all that long. It really does take time. Some people are sensitive to fills and have to have a little bit at a time. Try to stick with solid Protein like chicken, and not mushie things like cottage cheese. Those things go right through the band and you will get hungry sooner.

My dr. likes us to eat 75% Protein and 25% fruits and veggies and that seems to work well.

Interesting what you say about the chicken vs. cottage cheese. But if the chicken has any gristle at all it doesn't go down for me. Maybe I get hungry because while I have Protein, it's too soft (yogurt, ricotta cheese). But I have tried to have chicken curry salad and tuna too, which seem to go down ok. I have 2cc in my band and a lot of food gets stuck, sometimes because I wait too long to eat and then ingest too fast. I try not to make the same mistake twice, but obviously am still in the process of learning how to do the right thing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
